Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Betrayal

The words hung in the foyer like toxic gas. Julian turned his head slowly, looking back toward Clara with a look of absolute devastation. The color drained from his face entirely, leaving him looking like a corpse standing in the dim light.
"Clara... what is he talking about?" Julian asked, his voice cracking into a desperate plea. "Tell me he's lying. Tell me that's another one of his sick games."
Clara couldn't meet his eyes. She stared down at the wet manila folder on the table, her lower lip trembling uncontrollably. The dark maroon fabric of her dress seemed to suffocate her as she struggled to pull air into her lungs.
"It's true, Julian," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the rain lashing against the windows. "Before Michael left... before everything fell apart... there was a brief time when..." She couldn't finish the sentence. The shame choked the words in her throat.
Michael walked past Julian as if his brother were a ghost, stepping closer to Clara with a predatory grin. "You see, Julian? You spent ten years raising my child, believing you were the savior of this family. While all along, you were just raising my legacy under your roof."
Lily peeked out from behind the mahogany table, her big tearful eyes wide with confusion and fright. "Mommy? What are they saying? Why is that man shouting?"
"Shut up!" Julian roared, finally snapping under the crushing weight of the betrayal. He lunged at Michael, grabbing him by the collar of his wet trench coat and slamming him against the wood-paneled wall of the foyer.
Michael didn't fight back. He just laughed, a wet, rattling sound that infuriated Julian even more. "Go ahead, Julian. Kill me this time. But remember—if I die tonight, those custody papers go straight to the county family court, and Lily goes into the foster system within twenty-four hours."
Julian's fists trembled against Michael's collar. The urge to smash his brother's face into the wall battled fiercely with the desperate need to protect the little girl who was currently watching them in sheer terror.
"That's enough!" Margaret’s voice boomed through the hallway, sharp and commanding. She stepped forward, pulling the heavy silver key and the envelope from her pocket. She slammed her hand down on the hall table right beside the manila folder. "Neither of you is taking Lily anywhere. Not while I'm drawing breath in this house."
Michael raised an eyebrow, finally prying Julian’s hands off his coat and straightening his lapels. He looked at the envelope resting on the table next to his folder. His confident smirk faltered slightly as he recognized the handwriting.
"Where did you get that?" Michael asked, his voice losing its mocking edge for the first time since he walked through the door.

"From the fire," Margaret replied coldly. "Right where Clara tried to bury your past. Now, why don't we all go into the study and talk about what happens next?"
