Chapter 11 - The Confession on the Record

The silence in the foyer was so absolute that the pattering of the rain against the front windows sounded like falling gravel. Sheriff Thomas stared at Michael as if he were looking at a ghost stepping straight out of a horror movie. He slowly unsnapped the leather retention strap over his service pistol, his instincts as a lawman overriding his shock.

"If you're standing here in the flesh, Michael, then who or what was in that car ten years ago?" Sheriff Thomas demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. He looked back and forth between Michael and Julian.

Julian closed his eyes, leaning back against the wooden doorframe of the study. He knew the game was over. The web of lies had finally collapsed, crushing everyone caught inside its threads.

"It was a decoy vehicle," Michael answered smoothly, taking a slow step toward the sheriff. "Julian and Clara needed me out of the picture so they could loot the family accounts without interference. They staged the accident, cut the brakes, and let the car roll into the river while I watched from the tree line."

"That's a lie!" Clara screamed from the doorway, stepping forward despite Julian's attempt to hold her back. Her face was flushed with righteous fury, her dark maroon dress swirling around her ankles as she pointed a trembling finger at Michael. "You were bankrupt! You were going to frame Julian for your own embezzlement, and we had to protect the family from your criminal ruin!"

"Is that your defense, Clara?" Michael mocked, turning to face her with a cold, predatory sneer. "You conspired to commit murder because of a balance sheet?"

"Enough!" Sheriff Thomas barked, his voice echoing off the high oak ceilings. He drew his weapon, pointing it squarely at Julian. "Julian Miller, put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest for the attempted murder of Michael Miller and conspiracy to commit fraud."

Julian didn't resist. He slowly raised his hands, letting the encrypted flash drive drop from his fingers onto the floor. It clattered softly against the marble tiles before sliding to a stop near the sheriff's boots.

Clara let out a sharp cry of anguish, dropping to her knees beside Lily, who began to sob uncontrollably. Margaret stood by the archway, her face turning into a mask of bitter resignation as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around her son's wrists.

"Julian!" Lily cried out, stretching her small hands toward the man she had known as her father her entire life.

Sheriff Thomas bent down slowly, picking up the small flash drive from the floor. He slipped it into his breast pocket, looking up at Michael with a suspicious squint. "You might be alive, Michael, but that doesn't make you innocent. This flash drive contains financial records that will implicate you as well."

Michael’s smile didn't reach his eyes. "Let the courts decide that, Sheriff. At least I'll be alive to defend myself."

As the deputies led Julian toward the front door out into the storm, Margaret reached into her blouse and pulled out the envelope labeled FOR MICHAEL ONLY, sliding it quietly into her own pocket.
