Chapter 1 - The Fire That Consumed The Past

The living room of the Miller estate smelled of burning leather and acrid paper. Clara stood by the hearth, her dark maroon dress catching the amber glow of the flames. She watched the heavy leather-bound photo album blacken as the fire licked its spine. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps. Across the Persian rug, Julian lunged forward with the metal tongs, his face contorted in sheer panic as he tried to salvage the burning artifact.

"What have you done, Clara? Are you out of your mind?" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with a desperate fury that echoed off the high oak ceilings. He managed to yank the smoking book from the fire, dropping it onto the stone hearth where sparks scattered across the rug.

Clara spun around, her eyes blazing with a mixture of rage and long-suppressed terror. "I'm burning the lies, Julian! I'm burning the very foundation of this rotting house!" She stepped toward him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. "You should have let it turn to ash. We both know what's hidden inside."

"You had no right to destroy family history," Julian fired back, grabbing the heavy iron poker as if to defend himself against her wrath. "That book belongs to all of us. It belongs to the legacy we built."

"Legacy? You call a decade of deception a legacy?" Clara sneered, stepping closer until her face was inches from his chest. "It’s a cage built on stolen memories and dead men's secrets."

Little Lily sat huddled near the corner sofa, her pale face buried in her knees. Her sobs had quieted into a low, rhythmic shudder as she watched the adults tear each other apart. The pink dress she wore was stained with soot from the sudden scuffle.

"Stop it! Both of you, stop this madness right now!" Margaret commanded, her voice cutting through the shouting like shattered glass.

The elderly woman knelt beside the smoking album. Her trembling fingers brushed away the charred edges of the cover. With agonizing slowness, she pried the fused pages apart. There, tucked securely inside a secret pocket of the back lining, lay a pristine, heavy parchment envelope. The bold handwriting across the front read simply: FOR MICHAEL ONLY.

Clara froze instantly, the color draining entirely from her face. She raised a shaking hand to cover her open mouth, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared down at the recovered envelope.

"Michael hasn't been in this house for ten years," Margaret whispered, her eyes locking onto Clara with a chilling, predatory focus. "So why is his name on this?"
