Chapter 10 - The Breach at the Perimeter

The sharp, repetitive chime of the security monitor pierced the quiet atmosphere of the mahogany-paneled study. Eleanor stopped mid-sentence, her sharp blue eyes narrowing as she looked up at the wall-mounted screen displaying the camera feed from the estate’s main entrance gates.

On the screen, a sleek black sedan had rammed directly through the electronic security arm, splintering the polished wood into pieces. The car door swung open, and a sharp-faced man in a tailored grey suit stepped out, followed by two armed private security guards wearing tactical vests without department insignia.

Arthur Vance, who had followed Sarah down the stairs, stepped quickly into the study, his expression hardening as he watched the monitor. "That’s Richard Sterling. Linda’s primary silent partner in the Macau venture capital firm. I thought the federal injunction locked down his corporate assets this morning."

"It did," Eleanor said, her voice dropping an octave as she gripped the handle of her ebony cane. "Which means he’s here out of sheer desperation. He knows if the federal auditors trace those Macau wire transfers back to his holding company, his entire international portfolio goes up in smoke."

Sarah set the fountain pen down beside the red ribbon without a second hesitation. She turned away from the mahogany desk, her long brown hair swaying slightly over the shoulders of her green shirt.

"He’s not going to get past the marshals at the front entrance," Sarah stated calmly.

"The marshals left two minutes ago to transport Linda and Julian to the downtown holding facility," Arthur reminded her grimly, his hand instinctively reaching into his suit jacket. "There’s only one local patrol car stationed at the outer lodge, and Sterling brought private muscle."

Martha stepped into the doorway of the study, her hands trembling violently as she clutched a kitchen towel to her chest. "They're coming up the gravel drive! I saw them from the second-floor window!"

Eleanor tapped her cane hard against the polished floorboards. "Arthur, lock the front security shutters from the master console. Sarah, stay right here. We are not running this time."

"I'm not running, Grandmother," Sarah said, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable calm that defied the panic in the room. "They want to claim what they think is theirs? Let's show them who actually owns this house."

Before Arthur could reach the master console on the study wall, the heavy front doors of the mansion echoed with a violent, deafening series of thuds as someone began kicking against the oak panels from the outside. The reinforced locks held, but the sound vibrated through the floorboards beneath their feet.

"Open the door, Oakridge!" a harsh, muffled voice shouted through the heavy wood. "We know the federal agents cleared out! You can't hide behind a dead girl's name forever!"

Sarah walked slowly out of the study and back into the bright modern living room, stepping deliberately toward the heavy front doors. Arthur started to follow her, but Eleanor raised her ebony cane, signaling him to halt.

"Let her handle it," the old matriarch commanded softly, her eyes gleaming with fierce pride.

Sarah reached the entryway, her fingers resting lightly on the brass deadbolt. The kicking against the door stopped abruptly, replaced by the sound of a key grinding aggressively into the external keyhole. With a loud click, the deadbolt turned from the outside, and the heavy oak door swung wide open, revealing Richard Sterling standing on the threshold with his tactical guards flanking him.

Sterling sneered, stepping inside with an arrogant swagger, but his expression froze instantly when he saw Sarah standing alone in the foyer, looking straight into his eyes with absolute, terrifying composure.
