Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The living room of the Oakridge estate was blindingly bright, filled with the harsh midday sun cutting through floor-to-ceiling glass panels. Linda stood rigidly near the center of the room, her beige blouse unwrinkled and her beige trousers pressed to a razor edge. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure fury, every muscle in her forty-five-year-old face vibrating with adrenaline.
In her hand, she had clutched a grey cleaning cloth caked in oily black soot, which she had just hurled across the pristine glass coffee table.
"Clean this house or get out!" Linda screamed, her voice cutting through the quiet atmosphere like shattered glass.
Sarah stood a few feet away, her long brown hair falling loosely over her shoulders. She wore a simple green shirt and faded blue jeans, looking entirely out of place in the opulent, modern interior. She caught the dirty cloth out of the air with a practiced, fluid motion. Without breaking eye contact, she raised her hand and slowly wiped a smear of soot from her own left cheek, leaving a dark gray streak against her skin. Her expression remained completely unyielding, grounded in a deep, quiet resolve.
"No," Sarah said. Her voice was low, steady, and utterly devoid of fear.
Linda scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "You think you can just stand there and defy me in my own foyer? You’re nothing here. You’re hired help, nothing more than a trespasser who scrubbed the floors yesterday. Pick up that bucket and finish the hallway."
Sarah did not blink. She took a slow, measured breath, letting the silence stretch until it made the other people in the room visibly uncomfortable.
"This house belongs to me," Sarah said, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable weight that made the air in the room feel heavy.
Linda stared back, her mouth dropping open in utter disbelief and panic, her eyes wide with shock. She looked at Sarah as if the other woman had grown a second head. Just behind Linda, Martha—a sixty-year-old woman with her brown hair tied neatly back and wearing a dark blue dress—stood closely, wringing her hands together in deep distress. Martha looked at Linda with eyes full of warning and hidden guilt.
"Linda, you said Sarah didn’t know…" Martha whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Linda froze, the color draining entirely from her face as the implication of Martha’s words crashed down upon her. She opened her mouth in pure, unadulterated horror.

"Didn't know what?" Linda whispered, her voice cracking as the terrifying truth began to surface.
