Chapter 10: The Harvest Wedding on the Marsh

They were married on a warm Saturday in mid-October, on the grassy meadow beside the tidal creek.

There were no velvet ropes. There were no thousand-dollar floral arrangements, no private security details, and no social hierarchies designed to make people feel small.

The wedding altar was framed by two ancient red oak trees hung with hand-forged copper lanterns that David had crafted in his blacksmith shop.

Three hundred neighbors—guild apprentices, local sawyers, book conservators, teachers, nurses, and coastal families—sat on hand-hewn white pine benches beneath the cloudless autumn sky.

Catherine wore a simple, flowing ivory linen gown she had hand-sewn herself, adorned with a wreath of wild sea-lavender and dried sweetgrass.

David stood beside her in a clean dark wool vest and white linen shirt, his hand holding hers with a grip as strong and immovable as the granite cliffs.

Samuel Thorne stood beside them, holding an old family Bible, his eyes filled with tears of boundless, generational gratitude.

Standing in the second row among the papermakers was Julianna, wearing a clean cotton dress and canvas apron, her hands folded quietly, her face radiant with humble, peaceful joy as she joined the standing ovation for the bride and groom.

When the local country pastor pronounced the blessing, the crowd erupted into joyful cheers that echoed across the river valley as acoustic fiddles, banjos, and mandolins struck up a lively New England reel.

Long timber tables were assembled on the meadow, groaning beneath platters of roasted squash, smoked river trout, fresh sourdough bread, artisanal cheeses, and warm apple cobblers baked in the outdoor stone ovens.

They danced on the grass under the stars until midnight, celebrating a love that was rooted in truth, sustained by shared labor, and free from every shadow of pretense.
