The Counter-Lever

The air in the gallery grew suffocatingly thin. Clara could hear the faint thrum of the bass from the ballroom below, a rhythmic heartbeat of a world unaware of the storm brewing above it.

"A tragic accident implies predictability, Marcus," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave, honey turned to ice. "A structural collapse due to unapproved concrete mixtures isn't an accident. It's calculus. You calculated that the fines would be cheaper than the proper materials."

Marcus didn't deny it. He simply smiled, a thin, cruel line. "And what do you propose to do about it? A girl in a pretty dress with a grudge? The world runs on momentum, Clara. The Vance family has too much of it. Even if you found something, it would disappear into a sea of appeals before the ink could dry on an indictment."

"I wasn't looking for an indictment," Clara said. She reached into her small evening clutch and pulled out her phone. The screen displayed a green checkmark. Upload complete.

At that exact moment, Marcus’s phone vibrated violently in his breast pocket. Then another vibration from the floor below—the faint, collective murmur of a hundred smartphones receiving emergency news alerts simultaneously.

Marcus frowned, pulling out his device. His face drained of color as he read the headline flashing across the financial news networks: VANCE GLOBAL IMMINENT COLLAPSE: WHISTLEBLOWER REVEALS DECADE OF CORPORATE FRAUD AND MAN SLAUGHTER.

"You didn't go to the courts," Marcus whispered, his composure finally cracking.

"I went to the market," Clara said. "By tomorrow morning, your stock will be worthless. Your investors are already pulling out. The momentum just shifted, Marcus."
