Shadows in the Gallery

The second floor of the hotel housed the private art gallery, currently closed to the general public. It was a labyrinth of marble pillars and stark white walls holding paintings worth more than the average citizen would earn in a lifetime. Clara moved through the shadows, her heels making no sound on the thick Persian rugs.

She reached the designated utility closet near the eastern wing. Pressing a sequence into her phone, the electronic lock clicked open. Arthur was waiting inside, surrounded by portable servers and glowing monitors. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot behind thick glasses.

"You're late," Arthur whispered, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard. "The security mainframe resets every twenty minutes. We have a four-minute window before the firewalls re-engage."

"Julian was delayed by the press," Clara said, stepping into the cramped space. "Do we have the offshore routing numbers?"

Arthur paused, looking up at her. His eyes drifted to the small smear of blood on her neck. "Clara... look at yourself. You’re bleeding. If we do this, there is no turning back. The Vance family will use every resource to track us down. This isn't just justice; this is a declaration of war."

"It’s an eviction notice," Clara corrected softly. Her voice was steady, a chilling contrast to the anxiety radiating from Arthur. "They evicted forty families from existence to build that plaza. My father died with dust in his lungs, Arthur. I won't let them toast to his grave."

Arthur sighed, a heavy sound that seemed to carry the weight of their shared, fractured childhoods. "Initiating the upload. Five gigabytes of unredacted emails, engineering reports, and bribe receipts are being sent directly to the federal prosecutor's secure server."

A progress bar appeared on the central monitor. 20%. 40%.

Suddenly, a heavy footstep echoed from the gallery outside.
