The Gala of Ghosts

The Governor's mansion was surrounded by iron gates and armed guards. Inside, the atmosphere was festive, a sea of white ties and diamond necklaces. Clara entered using an invitation Eleanor Vance had provided before she left the country.

She wore a deep emerald green dress this time—the color of envy, the color of poison. Her dark hair was styled beautifully, completely concealing the faint scar on her jaw.

As she moved through the crowd, she spotted Governor Sterling. He was a silver-haired man with an athletic build and an easy, grandfatherly charm. He was surrounded by a circle of wealthy donors, laughing at a joke Clara couldn't hear.

She waited until the circle dispersed, then stepped into his path.

"Governor Sterling," she said, offering a polite nod. "A beautiful evening."

Sterling smiled warmly. "Thank you, my dear. I don't believe we've met. Are you with the Vance group? I heard about their recent... legal troubles. A shame."

"The Vances were just tenants, Governor," Clara said smoothly, her eyes locking onto his. "I’m here on behalf of the landlords. The real owners of the lower district plaza."

Sterling’s smile didn't fade, but his eyes grew instantly cold, the warmth vanishing like a candle blown out by a sudden draft. "I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else, young lady."
