Chapter 6

Marcus backed away until the back of his knees hit the edge of the white sofa, his eyes darting frantically toward the locked front door as if he could somehow phase right through the wood. The bravado had completely vanished, leaving behind a small, pathetic shell of a man caught in a spider’s web of his own making.
"I was going to buy it back, Elena! I swear to God, the market was supposed to rebound!" Marcus stammered, holding his hands up defensively as Elena closed the distance between them.
"You didn't just gamble on the market, Marcus," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. "You forged a legal document, committed wire fraud, and systematically dismantled everything my family worked three generations to secure, all so you could impress your downtown investor friends who probably laugh behind your back."
Maya picked herself up from the cushions, her cream loungewear wrinkled and stained with spilled noodle sauce. She looked at Marcus not with love or anger anymore, but with a profound, chilling disgust.
"You lied to me too," Maya said, her voice shaking with restrained fury. "You told me your startup was fully funded by venture capital. You let me quit my job, you let me move in here, all while you were burning our lives to the ground."
"I was doing it for us!" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking desperately.
"Shut up!" Maya roared, stepping forward and delivering a sharp, resounding slap across Marcus’s cheek. The sound echoed loudly through the modern living room.
Marcus clutched his stinging face, staring at Maya in shock. Clara didn't intervene; she simply turned her back on them, walking slowly back to the kitchen to stir the simmering red stew, her shoulders trembling with quiet grief.
Elena didn't raise her voice, which made her anger infinitely more terrifying. She pulled a sleek, encrypted tablet out of her briefcase, tapped the screen twice, and held it out toward Marcus.
"Here is the complete digital audit trail pulled from the municipal clerk's office twenty minutes ago," Elena said smoothly. "IP addresses, device serial numbers, biometric verification logs, and the exact timestamp of the fraudulent signature upload. My legal team already has copies. The federal indictment is scheduled to be filed at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
Marcus stared at the tablet screen as if it were a venomous snake. His knees buckled slightly, and he dropped heavily onto the white sofa, burying his face in his hands as a low, dry sob escaped his throat.
"You can't do this to me, Elena. We're family," Marcus choked out.
"Family doesn't rob the cradle and the grave," Elena replied coldly. She tapped the tablet again, locking the device instantly. "And now, we are going to discuss how you’re going to sign over every remaining asset you possess before the police arrive to escort you out."

Before Marcus could answer, the smart home wall panel suddenly flared to life, flashing an urgent amber alert across the screen.
"System Warning: Unauthorized external network intrusion detected on secondary gateway," the automated voice announced.
