Chapter 2

Marcus slammed his palm against the smart wall panel again, but the screen only flashed a stubborn, unyielding crimson. The quiet hum of the climate control system felt oppressive, mimicking the mounting pressure inside the room. Maya rushed to his side, her fingers trembling as she tried to swipe her own administrative profile onto the glass interface. The device beeped twice in rejection, locking her out with a sterile, computerized dismissal.
"You've revoked our credentials?" Maya gasped, turning to face Elena with eyes wide with disbelief and betrayal. "You locked us out of our own profiles in our own house? Elena, this is insane. Open this door right now, or I swear I am calling the police."
Elena walked past them toward the kitchen island, her rolling suitcase trailing silently behind her on the hardwood floor. She gently lowered Leo into his high chair, wiping a smudge of stew from his cheek with a clean napkin before turning back to face the adults. Her demeanor was clinical, devoid of the theatrical anger Marcus and Maya were displaying.
"Call them," Elena said evenly, crossing her arms over her dark blazer. "Tell the dispatcher that the homeowner has secured her property against unauthorized occupants who have defaulted on their informal residency agreements. Let’s see how fast they escort you off the premises."
Marcus gripped the back of the sofa, his knuckles turning white. His casual demeanor had entirely evaporated, replaced by a desperate, cornered fury.
"We had an agreement, Elena. We were building something together. A family ecosystem," Marcus stammered, his voice rising in pitch. "You said you wanted us here to help with Leo while you climbed the corporate ladder. Now you pull this authoritarian stunt just because we wanted a little breathing room?"
"Breathing room?" Elena laughed softly, a dry, humorless sound. "You liquidated my emergency fund to invest in a cryptocurrency scheme that collapsed three weeks ago. Don't talk to me about breathing room when I’m the one suffocating under the debt you accumulated behind my back."
Maya flinched, stepping back as if struck physically. She looked at Marcus, a flicker of genuine shock crossing her features. Marcus refused to meet her eyes, instead glaring viciously at Elena. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the bubbling of Clara’s stew on the stove.
Clara silently ladled a small portion into a ceramic bowl, her face lined with deep sorrow. She placed the bowl in front of Elena without a word, knowing her daughter hadn’t eaten all day. Elena nodded gratefully to her mother, keeping her gaze fixed firmly on Marcus.

"You think you’ve won because you have the keys and the code," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping into a low, venomous register. "You think you can control everyone like your employees down at the firm. But you don't know half of what’s been happening under this roof while you were flying across the country."
Elena froze, her spoon halfway to her mouth.
