Chapter 1

The metallic clunk of the smart locks engaging echoed through the high-ceilinged, sunlit living room like a gunshot. Marcus jumped from the white sofa, spilling his takeout noodles onto the plush gray rug. He stared wildly at the front door, his chest heaving under his beige t-shirt. Maya dropped her chopsticks, her cream loungewear suddenly looking entirely too fragile for the sudden chill in the air.
Elena stood rigidly near the kitchen threshold, her dark business suit immaculate despite the frantic transit from downtown, cradling one-year-old Leo against her shoulder. The toddler blinked sleepily, his tiny hand tangled in the lapel of her crisp white shirt. Clara wiped her brow with the back of a flour-dusted hand, stepping away from the giant cooking pot that still bubbled with a thick, aromatic red stew. The tension in the open-plan room was thick enough to cut with a butcher’s knife.
Marcus took a stuttering step forward, his hands raised in defensive disbelief.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, Elena? Unlock the door right now! You can't just trap us in our own home!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking slightly on the high notes.
Elena didn’t flinch. Her dark eyes remained locked onto his, cold and absolute. She shifted Leo slightly, her professional posture unyielding.
"Your own home, Marcus? Let’s get one thing straight before we discuss doors," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, measured whisper. "This house is financed entirely by my credit, my equity, and my signature. You haven't paid a utility bill in fourteen months."
Maya stood up slowly, crossing her arms over her chest, her face flushing with indignant rage.
"How dare you march in here and talk to Marcus like that! We are contributing to this household, and you treat us like squatters in your little corporate hotel!" Maya yelled, stepping closer to Elena.
"You eat takeout on my white sofa while my mother breaks her back cooking meals you demanded she make," Elena replied, her tone sharpening like a blade. "I gave you the lifestyle you can actually afford."
Clara stepped forward, placing a gentle, calloused hand on Elena’s arm, whispering in a low, exhausted tone.
"Elena, child, let’s not do this in front of the baby."
Elena looked down at her mother, her expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening again as Marcus lunged toward the wall panel, frantically punching code after code to override the lockdown system. The screen flashed a bright, unyielding crimson.

"Access Denied. Master Override Required," the synthetic voice of the house announced smoothly.
Marcus spun around, his face pale with sudden, unadulterated panic.
