Chapter 8

The subterranean corridors of the facility seemed to stretch on indefinitely as Thomas and Agent Vance navigated the labyrinth of secure zones toward the logistics and quartermaster division. The digital clock on the corridor wall flashed 02:45 AM, leaving precious little time before the morning shift change would bring an influx of engineers, pilots, and administrative staff into the complex. The stakes could not have been higher; if the compromised logs were wiped or altered before they secured the physical evidence, Thomas would be left defenseless against the impending tribunal.
They reached a heavy reinforced door marked Sector Logistics - Restricted Access. Vance bypassed the electronic keypad by plugging a portable diagnostic tool into the service port, overriding the local lock with federal security privileges. The door hissed open, revealing a vast, dimly lit warehouse filled floor-to-ceiling with rows of metal shelving units containing flight suits, survival gear, and calibrated equipment. At the far end of the room, behind a high counter cluttered with requisition forms, sat Master Sergeant Henderson, looking startled as the federal agent and the decorated pilot stepped unannounced into his domain.
Henderson stood up quickly, smoothing down his rumpled uniform shirt, his eyes darting nervously between Thomas and Vance. "Commander Miller... Agent Vance. I wasn't expecting an inspection at this hour," Henderson stammered, his voice carrying a nervous tremor that completely undermined his usual gruff exterior. "Is there an equipment malfunction with the flight gear?" Thomas stopped ten feet from the counter, his posture rigid and his eyes locked onto the quartermaster with unwavering intensity.
"Drop the act, Henderson," Thomas said, his voice cold and flat, cutting through the silence of the warehouse like a scalpel. "We know someone accessed Locker 114 using an administrative master override code today at precisely 2:15 PM. The only person assigned to hold the master override keys for Sector Four during the afternoon shift rotation is the duty quartermaster." Henderson swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently as he took an involuntary half-step backward, bumping against a tall shelf of spare helmets.
"That's... that's absurd," Henderson protested, though his voice lacked any genuine conviction. "Anyone could misplace a PIN, or the system could be experiencing a routine server glitch. The mainframe logs are notoriously unreliable during high-capacity data transfers." Agent Vance stepped forward, placing a heavy leather binder containing the printed access logs directly onto the metal counter, sliding it until it bumped against Henderson's trembling hands.

"The mainframe logs are fully encrypted and backed up on an isolated off-site server, Sergeant," Vance stated coldly. "They show that your personal authorization code—Override Alpha-Nine—was used to unlock Locker 114 at 2:14 PM today, exactly one minute before the unauthorized data packet was transmitted. Furthermore, financial records flagged by our security division show an incoming wire transfer from an untraceable offshore account hitting your personal digital wallet less than an hour after the transmission was completed."
The color drained entirely from Henderson's face. He looked down at the incriminating access logs, realizing that the web of deception had collapsed entirely around him. He gripped the edge of the metal counter so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. The illusion of control dissolved completely, replaced by the crushing realization of treason and inevitable court-martial. "I didn't want to do it," Henderson whispered, his voice cracking as he slumped forward, defeated by the absolute weight of the evidence. "They said it was just a diagnostic test. They said nobody would get hurt."
