Chapter 11

The revelation hung heavy in the hum of the server room. Director Sterling—the polished, charismatic face of the aerospace command, a man who regularly briefed government panels and appeared on national television to praise the facility's technological achievements—was the architect behind the industrial espionage conspiracy. He was the one who had orchestrated Thomas's framing, utilizing a compromised quartermaster and a complex web of digital deception to eliminate the senior flight commander before Friday's critical launch.

"It all makes sense now," Thomas said, his voice hard as iron as the pieces of the puzzle locked into place with terrifying clarity. "Sterling has been pushing for months to accelerate the commercialization timeline of the experimental propulsion thrusters, bypassing rigorous atmospheric safety protocols. I refused to sign off on the launch readiness report last week because the thermal shielding hadn't passed stress testing. If the ship failed at high altitude, it would have been catastrophic. By framing me for industrial espionage, Sterling removes the only dissenting voice on the flight board and places his own hand-picked puppet in command of the test flight."

Agent Vance disconnected his portable data-tap from the server rack, sliding the compact diagnostic tool back into his tactical vest with grim determination. "We have the complete digital footprint, Commander," Vance said, his voice steady and resolute. "The routing logs, the proxy handshakes, and the financial audit trails linking Sterling's discretionary accounts to Henderson's offshore wallet. This isn't just circumstantial evidence anymore; it's an airtight federal case of treason and sabotage."

"An airtight case doesn't matter if Sterling initiates the launch sequence before the military tribunal can intervene," Thomas countered, checking his wristwatch. The digital display flashed 03:30 AM. Only two and a half hours remained before the zero-six-hundred shift change and the scheduled morning briefing where Sterling intended to announce Thomas's suspension and assume direct command of the experimental flight. "If Sterling realizes his digital trap has been exposed, he will attempt to fast-track the launch window to cover his tracks, risking the lives of everyone on board just to bury the evidence."

Vance nodded sharply, fully grasping the urgency of the tactical situation. "We need to move directly to the executive command center on Level Three and place Sterling under immediate federal arrest before he can access the launch control console. I'll call in a tactical backup team to secure the perimeter and prevent any unauthorized departures from the landing pads." As Vance reached for his satellite communicator, the sharp, shrill whine of an emergency klaxon suddenly pierced the quiet air of the facility.

Red strobe lights began flashing along the corridors outside the server room, casting an ominous crimson glow across the walls. The automated overhead PA system crackled to life, its synthesized voice echoing through the complex with chilling precision: "Attention all personnel. Unscheduled telemetry activation detected in Launch Bay Alpha. Flight sequence initialization underway. Countdown initiated for experimental vehicle ascension." Thomas stared at Vance, the blood turning to ice in his veins. Sterling hadn't waited for morning; he had initiated the launch sequence early, setting the doomed spacecraft on a collision course with destiny.
