Chapter 12

The red strobe lights painted the subterranean corridors in frantic shades of crimson as Thomas and Agent Vance sprinted toward the high-speed elevator bank leading directly to Launch Bay Alpha on Level Three. The automated evacuation klaxons wailed overhead, drowning out all ordinary sound and driving a surge of panic through the few early-morning technicians streaming out of the side offices. Every second counted now. If Sterling successfully launched the experimental rocket before they could override the primary guidance system, the compromised thermal shielding would disintegrate upon atmospheric re-entry, resulting in an unmitigated disaster.
They reached the elevator bank just as the doors slid open, revealing an empty car. Vance slammed his fist against the emergency override button, locking the cabin into express transit mode, bypassing all intermediate stops directly to the upper launch deck. As the elevator surged upward with stomach-churning acceleration, Thomas focused his mind entirely on the operational layout of the launch control console. His training as a flight commander was the only weapon they had left against Sterling’s calculated sabotage.
The elevator shuddered to a halt, the heavy doors parting to reveal the cavernous expanse of Launch Bay Alpha. The massive room was dominated by a three-story glass observation bulkhead overlooking the towering, sleek silhouette of the experimental rocket resting on the vertical gantry outside. Down on the main control floor below the observation deck, Director Sterling stood before the primary master console, his fingers flying across the holographic flight deck as he aggressively overrode the countdown safety protocols. Two armed private security guards stood rigidly at attention near the blast doors, their weapons drawn and ready to defend the renegade director.
"Hold right there!" one of the guards shouted, leveling his assault rifle directly at Thomas and Vance as they stepped out of the elevator car onto the observation walkway. Agent Vance instantly drew his federal sidearm, taking cover behind a reinforced concrete pillar while flashing his badge. "Federal agents! Drop your weapons immediately, or you will be charged with armed treason and accessory to sabotage!" The guard hesitated for a fraction of a second, caught off guard by the federal intervention, but Sterling did not even bother to turn around from his console.

"Don't listen to them!" Sterling shouted over the roar of the internal fuel pumps priming the rocket engines below. His voice echoed sharply through the cavernous bay. "Commander Miller is a disgraced traitor whose security clearance was revoked an hour ago for industrial espionage. He is attempting to sabotage the launch to protect his own criminal enterprise. Eliminate them if they interfere!" The armed guards tightened their grips on their weapons, raising their barrels as the standoff reached its absolute boiling point.
Thomas didn't hesitate. Drawing on his tactical flight training and the split-second situational awareness that had kept him alive in the cockpit, he didn't reach for a weapon. Instead, he lunged sideways, kicking a heavy steel maintenance cart directly into the path of the nearest guard, sending the man crashing into the reinforced railing. At the same time, Agent Vance returned suppressing fire against the second guard, forcing him to duck behind a heavy computer terminal. Thomas vaulted over the glass partition, dropping directly onto the lower control deck behind Sterling before the director even realized his tactical advantage had evaporated.
