Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

"Mom!" Leo screamed, sprinting down the metal walkway of the cell block.

The man in the tactical gear spun around, dropping the crowbar with a loud clatter. He pulled a sidearm from his holster, aiming it squarely at the doorway as Leo rushed into the room.

"Stop right there, kid, or she takes the first bullet," the guard snarled, his voice distorted by a tactical comms mask.

Sarah lifted her head, her dark hair damp with sweat, her face bruised but her eyes burning with fierce determination. "Leo! Get out of here! Run!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Leo yelled, stopping ten feet away, his hands trembling as he stared down the barrel of the gun. He didn't run. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, his hazel eyes locking onto the masked man's visor.

"You can't shoot me," Leo said, his voice surprisingly steady in the deafening silence of the ruined control room. "The whole world is watching."

The masked man laughed harshly. "There are no cameras here, kid. This facility is offline."

"Are you sure about that?" a voice echoed from the corridor behind them.

Detective Vance stepped into the doorway, holding a high-yield tactical tablet wired directly to a satellite uplink. "Every single action you're taking right now is being broadcast live to the federal attorney general's office and three major national news networks. Drop the weapon."

The guard hesitated, his eyes darting toward the open corridor where flashing red and blue lights were now reflecting off the walls. Outside, the sirens of a dozen state police cruisers echoed closer than ever.

With a curse, the guard lowered his pistol, ripping off his comms mask and throwing it to the floor. "You win," he spat, holding his hands out as Vance stepped forward and clicked heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Leo didn't wait for the guards to secure the room. He bolted across the concrete floor, throwing his arms around his mother and burying his face in her black top, sobbing with overwhelming relief.

"You came back for me," Sarah whispered, her voice breaking as she hugged her son tightly, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks. "You actually saved me, Leo."

"I told you I would," Leo mumbled into her shoulder.

Suddenly, a loud, heavy mechanical grinding sound echoed from the ceiling above them, and the concrete floor beneath their feet began to shudder violently.
