Chapter 12 - The Confession Tape

Before the bailiffs could react, Arthur Sterling pulled a small digital recorder from his pocket and slammed the play button. The courtroom speakers crackled to life, broadcasting a crystal-clear recording of a conversation recorded years ago.
"If you sign these false statements implicating Sarah, I'll make sure the investigation into your firm quietly disappears," Sterling’s recorded voice echoed through the room, chilling everyone to the bone. "Refuse, and your wife and newborn son will share your cell."
The courtroom was dead silent. The voice was unmistakable—it was Arthur Sterling blackmailing Leo’s late father a decade ago.
Sterling stood motionless, the recorder clattering against the wooden defense table as he realized the game was finally, irrevocably over. He looked around the room, seeing not a single ally left among the judges, marshals, or jurors.
"You built an entire career on lies," Marcus said, stepping forward, his voice ringing with righteous fury. "You destroyed innocent lives just to climb the political ladder."
Judge Thomas slowly stood up, removing his glasses and staring down at the disgraced district attorney with absolute disgust. "Mr. Sterling, you are hereby suspended from the bar effective immediately. Federal marshals, place the defendant under arrest."
Three marshals moved in instantly, grabbing Sterling’s arms and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. Sterling didn't resist. He simply stared blankly at the floor as they dragged him out of the courtroom, past the rows of cheering reporters and flashing cameras.
Leo let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of the past weeks finally lifting from his small shoulders. He looked up at Marcus, a bright, tearful smile breaking through his tired face. "We did it. We saved Mom."
"Your mother isn't free yet, Leo," Marcus warned gently, putting a hand on his shoulder. "The federal penitentiary requires formal release papers signed by the attorney general himself. That process takes twenty-four hours."
Leo’s smile faltered. "Twenty-four hours? But he's arrested! Why can't she come home right now?"
"Bureaucracy moves slowly, kid," a voice said from behind them.
Detective Vance walked over, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "The release order is being processed, but there's a problem. The warden at the federal facility where Sarah was transferred... he hasn't answered our comms for the last ten minutes."
Leo’s heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean he hasn't answered?"

Vance tapped the tablet, his face turning pale. "The prison's main security feed just went offline. And local emergency dispatch is reporting an unauthorized lockdown at the maximum-security block."
