Chapter 9: The Boardroom Breach

Elias froze on the ladder, his fingers tightening around the cold metal rungs as Dr. Chancler’s voice echoed clearly down the ventilation shaft. The urgency in the boardroom was palpable; the corporate board was assembled virtually, waiting for the definitive proof that human biology could be successfully subordinated to automated quantum control.
"We don't have time to wait," Elena whispered from the rungs below him, her voice barely audible over the hum of the internal ventilation fan. "If he initiates the broadcast sequence now, the data transfer will bypass the physical server and pull directly from your neural trace in real time."
Maya, who had reached the top of the conduit, carefully pried open the small decorative floor vent that overlooked the executive boardroom. Through the narrow slats, the sprawling mahogany table came into view, surrounded by empty leather chairs facing a massive, wall-mounted display screen. On the screen, a dozen video feeds flickered with the faces of high-ranking corporate executives. At the head of the table stood Dr. Arthur Chancler, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, holding a sleek master remote control.
"Dad," Maya whispered under her breath, her hands gripping the edges of the vent.
"Step aside, Maya," Elena instructed, squeezing past Elias on the ladder to position herself behind the opening. With a swift, practiced motion, she slipped her override cylinder through the slats and aimed it directly at the central terminal beneath the big screen.
Down in the boardroom, Dr. Chancler raised the remote control, his thumb hovering over the red execution button. "Ladies and gentlemen," he announced to the virtual board members, his voice carrying an unnatural, theatrical confidence. "Today marks the final obsolescence of human error. Project Icarus is officially live."
Before his thumb could press the button, Elena triggered the override cylinder. A sharp, high-pitched frequency erupted through the boardroom’s integrated sound system, causing the massive wall-mounted display to flicker violently. The corporate faces on the screen froze, pixelating into chaotic blocks of color as the local network was violently hijacked.

Dr. Chancler stumbled backward, dropping the remote as a piercing feedback loop filled the room. "What is the meaning of this?" he shouted, looking frantically around the empty boardroom as if searching for the source of the sabotage.
"The game is over, Arthur," Elena’s voice rang out, amplified through the boardroom speakers as she shoved the floor vent open and dropped effortlessly onto the polished mahogany table.
