Chapter 4: Ghosts of the Past

Dr. Elena Vance stepped into the dim light of the corridor, her gaze fixed entirely on Maya. Elias stared at her in utter disbelief; he had memorized her research papers during his first week in the facility, believing her to be a martyr of science rather than a survivor in hiding. The tension in the hallway was palpable, thick enough to choke on as the automated ventilation systems fought a losing battle against rising smoke from the server room.

"You're dead," Maya breathed, her hands trembling as she stared at the woman her father had spent millions erasing from corporate history. "The official report stated the containment vessel ruptured. We attended your funeral."

"Arthur loves a good tragedy, especially when he writes the script," Elena replied with a bitter, humorless smile. She unclipped a small metallic cylinder from her belt—a manual override key capable of disabling every neural rig within a five-mile radius. "He needed a scapegoat to secure the Department of Defense funding, so he staged an accident, locked me out of my own network, and rebranded my life's work as his personal family legacy."

Elias shifted his weight, wincing as the harness straps dug into his collarbone. "If you survived, why didn't you come forward sooner? People are still dying in these trials."

"Because coming forward with words gets you locked in a padded cell or a shallow grave, Elias," Elena said, turning her intense, analytical gaze toward him. "I had to wait until the quantum lattice reached critical mass. Tomorrow’s live version isn't just a demonstration for the board of directors. It's the launch day of an autonomous corporate intelligence network designed to replace human oversight in military contracts entirely. If Arthur executes that upload, nobody will ever be able to stop him."

Maya finally recovered her composure, her eyes narrowing as she looked between Elena and Elias. "You think you can just walk out of here with him? The facility is locked down from the central mainframe. Even if you disable the local rigs, the perimeter defenses will turn you both to ash before you reach the outer courtyard."

"The perimeter defenses rely on the same quantum server that's currently downloading our master archives," Elena said, tapping the metallic cylinder in her hand. "Which means right now, your father's automated security network is too busy choking on stolen data to notice a couple of ghosts walking out the front door."

Without waiting for a response, Elena stepped forward and pressed the override key directly against the base of Elias’s harness. A soft blue light pulsed through the wiring, and with a heavy, satisfying mechanical sigh, the pneumatic locks released. The straps fell away from his shoulders, hitting the floor with a dull clatter. For the first time in eighteen months, Elias felt completely unburdened by steel.
