Chapter 7: The Race Against the Grid

"Move!" Elena shouted, breaking into a sprint toward the narrow service ladder as the nearest blast door slammed down into the floor with a deafening crash, sending up a shower of metallic sparks.
Maya followed closely behind, her black pants and beige jacket brushing against the humming metal casing of the servers as she navigated the narrow walkway with practiced familiarity. Elias pushed his glasses up his nose and forced his fatigued legs to move faster, the adrenaline surging through his veins acting as a temporary anesthetic against his deep-seated exhaustion.
The automated synthetic voice continued its relentless countdown, echoing off the concrete walls and vibrating through the floor grates. Lockdown complete in ninety seconds. All personnel must evacuate immediately.
Elena reached the ladder first, gripping the rungs and signaling for Maya and Elias to descend ahead of her. "Down into the utility trench! Hurry!"
Maya dropped through the hatch without hesitation, sliding down the vertical ladder into the dark, narrow maintenance tunnel below. Elias followed immediately, his boots hitting the concrete floor of the trench with a heavy thud just as Elena dropped down behind them and slammed the heavy maintenance hatch shut above their heads. The muffled sound of the blast doors sealing the upper level echoed through the metal, cutting off the harsh red glare of the server room.
The utility trench was illuminated only by the faint, greenish glow of emergency floor strips. The air here was damp and smelled of stagnant water and old dust. It was quiet—an eerie, heavy stillness that stood in sharp contrast to the roaring chaos of the server room above them.
"We're safe from the immediate lockdown here," Elena said, pulling a compact multi-tool from her jumpsuit pocket and setting to work on a junction box set into the concrete wall. "This conduit runs directly beneath the corporate boardroom on the surface. It's the only pathway left untouched by Arthur's mainframe."
Maya leaned against the damp concrete wall, trying to catch her breath. Her composure had completely unraveled, leaving behind the exhausted shell of a young woman who had just realized her entire life had been built on a foundation of digital lies and corporate exploitation.

"He's going to execute the live version early," Maya whispered, looking at Elias in the dim green light. "If the servers are locked down, my father won't wait until tomorrow morning. He'll initiate the final transfer from his private terminal right now."
Elias felt a cold knot twist in his stomach. The simulation of his own consciousness was already sitting in the master directory, waiting for the final authorization command. If Dr. Chancler executed the transfer from the boardroom, Elias’s physical body would suffer total neural collapse while his mind was permanently enslaved to the corporate network.
