Chapter 7: Flight from the Apartment Complex

The sound of heavy footsteps echoing from the living room froze Clara in her tracks. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as she clutched the small brass key tightly in her fist. She backed away from the closet slowly, her eyes darting frantically around the ransacked bedroom in search of an alternative exit. The window led out onto a steep, rusted fire escape that dropped three stories down into a dark alleyway below.
“Clara?” Mark’s voice called out in a sharp, urgent whisper from the hallway doorway. He appeared a second later, his tall frame tense and alert. “Someone’s in the building. Two men in dark clothing just came up the front stairwell. We need to move right now.”
“The fire escape,” Clara whispered, pointing toward the window.
Without hesitation, Mark crossed the room, unlocked the security latch, and shoved the window upward. It jammed halfway with a loud screech of rusted metal, but Mark threw his weight against the frame, forcing it open wide enough to squeeze through. He climbed out onto the metal grating first, extending his hand backward to help Clara navigate the hazardous drop.
As Clara stepped out onto the cold metal platform, the apartment door was kicked inward with a resounding crash. Shouts rang out from the living room as unfamiliar voices barked commands.
“Check the bedrooms! Cut off the back exit!”
“Go, go, go!” Mark urged, grabbing Clara’s hand as they began descending the rusted iron steps of the fire escape at a breakneck speed. The metal groaned under their weight, vibrating violently with every hurried step.
Reaching the bottom landing, Mark jumped the final six feet into the dark alley, landing squarely on his boots before turning to catch Clara as she dropped down from the lower rung. They didn’t look back. Pushing through the overgrown weeds and overflowing trash bins, they sprinted toward the far end of the alley where Mark’s car sat idling in the shadows.
Mark unlocked the doors remotely as they approached. They dove inside, slamming the doors shut and locking them instantly. Mark threw the car into reverse, tires spinning against the wet asphalt as he backed out of the narrow alleyway with expert precision, before shifting into drive and accelerating rapidly into the night traffic.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke. The car filled only with the sound of their ragged breathing and the hum of the engine as they put distance between themselves and the apartment complex.
Clara looked down at her open palm, where the brass key to Locker 104 still rested safely. She let out a shaky sigh of relief, though the adrenaline still coursed furiously through her veins.
“They know we’re looking for the ledger,” Clara said, her voice shaking slightly as she fastened her seatbelt. “They’re tracking our movements, Mark. How did they know we would come back here tonight?”

Mark gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white in the dim dashboard light. He didn’t answer immediately, his eyes fixed on the empty road ahead, his mind racing with grim possibilities.
