Chapter 2: Immediate Aftermath and Confusion

Chaos erupted inside the chapel instantly. Muffled screams echoed against the vaulted wooden ceiling as several elderly relatives clutched their chests, stepping backward in sheer terror. Mark froze, his hands still extended outward where Clara had just broken free, his eyes widening in complete disbelief as he stared down into the white casket. The impossible was happening right before his eyes; the person declared clinically dead by two separate attending physicians was moving, breathing, and grasping for air.
Clara dropped the heavy wood axe, the tool clattering loudly against the floorboards. Without hesitation, she dropped to her knees beside the casket, ignoring the dirt and splinters. Her professional instincts immediately overrode her shock. She reached into the tight enclosure, gently taking the freezing, pale hand in her own warm palms, checking for a pulse at the wrist. It was weak, thready, and dangerously slow, but it was unquestionably there.
“Get an ambulance on the phone right now!” Clara commanded, her voice ringing out with absolute medical authority that brooked no argument. She looked up directly at the paralyzed funeral director standing near the back row. “Move! She is in severe hypometabolic shock, likely induced by acute medical poisoning or a profound pharmaceutical overdose!”
Mark finally snapped out of his paralysis, stepping forward and kneeling beside his wife. His face was pale, his dark hair slightly disheveled from the struggle. He gently placed a steady hand on Clara’s shaking shoulder. “Clara, let me help. I’ve got her legs. We need to get this lid off completely so she can breathe.”
Working together with frantic synchronization, Mark and Clara pried the remaining wood away from the hinges, exposing the full body of Elena Vance, Clara’s thirty-eight-year-old sister who had supposedly suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at her home three nights prior. Elena’s eyes remained half-closed, her lips tinged with a frightening blue hue, shivering uncontrollably despite the warm indoor air.
Funeral attendees began pulling out their smartphones, whispering frantically among themselves. Some recorded the bizarre scene, while others fled the chapel entirely, overwhelmed by the supernatural atmosphere of the event. The sanctity of the funeral had been thoroughly shattered, replaced by the harsh, sterile reality of a medical emergency happening in the most inappropriate place imaginable.
Clara gently stroked Elena’s damp forehead, whispering soothing words of comfort while assessing her neurological responses. “You’re safe now, Elena. I’ve got you. Just focus on breathing.”

Mark stood up, pulling his phone from his suit pocket, dialing emergency services with trembling fingers. As he spoke to the dispatcher, his gaze locked onto his sister-in-law's face, a cold knot forming in his stomach. This wasn't a miracle. Someone had made a catastrophic, calculated mistake, or worse, committed a deliberate act.
