Chapter 5: The Secret Ledger

The sterile light of the hospital room hummed softly, casting a cold glow over Elena’s pale face. Clara sat closely beside the bed, holding her sister’s fragile hand, while Mark stood near the locked door, keeping a watchful eye on the hallway outside.

“Elena, you’re safe here,” Clara reassured her, though her own voice lacked conviction. “We are in a secure hospital, surrounded by doctors, law enforcement, and security cameras. Whatever happened at your house, whatever forced you into that terrible state, it’s over. You’re breathing, and we’re going to figure this out together.”

Elena shook her head slowly on the pillow, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye and tracking down her hollow cheek. “You don't understand, Clara. It wasn't an accident. It was Meridian Pharmaceuticals. I found the ledger on my secure terminal before the men broke into my apartment. They didn't just falsify safety data for the new neuro-stimulant trials; they intentionally accelerated human testing on vulnerable populations in private care facilities.”

Mark stepped closer from the doorway, his tall frame tensing. “A major pharmaceutical firm tried to murder their own internal auditor and stage a fake funeral to bury the evidence permanently? That sounds like a plot from a thriller, Elena, not real life.”

“It is very real, Mark,” Elena replied, her voice dropping to a frightened whisper as she glanced nervously toward the window blinds. “They have lawyers, politicians, and private security contractors on their payrolls. The coroner who signed my death certificate—Dr. Aris—he’s on their board of directors. He personally supervised my autopsy preparation. That’s why they rushed the funeral service so quickly. They wanted me deep in the ground before the seventy-two-hour metabolic window expired.”

A cold chill settled over the room. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as the horrifying puzzle pieces snapped into place. The rushed paperwork, the closed-casket mandate, the suspicious lack of family consultation—everything had been orchestrated by professionals with unlimited resources.

“We need to go to the police right now,” Clara declared, standing up abruptly. “We can file an immediate federal report, secure protection, and launch a criminal investigation into Meridian Pharmaceuticals.”

“No police,” Elena said sharply, grabbing Clara’s wrist with surprising strength. “Not yet. The corporate tentacles reach deep into local law enforcement. If we go through official channels without ironclad proof, we’ll just walk straight into another trap. The ledger—the encrypted hard drive containing all the financial transfers, patient names, and trial logs—I hid it before they caught me.”

Mark crossed his arms, his expression grim and calculating. “Where did you hide it, Elena?”

“Inside the false bottom of the storage locker at the central train station,” she whispered, closing her eyes in exhaustion. “Locker 104. The key is in the pocket of the black coat I was wearing the night they attacked me—the coat that’s currently hanging in the hallway closet at my empty apartment.”
