Chapter 8: An Unseen Threat

As autumn set in, the city began preparing for its annual Winter Gala—the very event where Leo and Lily had first crossed paths one year prior. Arthur was scheduled to officially present Leo to the public as his late brother’s legal heir and announce the creation of the Elena Vance Foundation, a multi-million-dollar charity designed to build orphanages, warm shelters, and free medical clinics across the city’s poorest districts.

However, tension hung heavy in the air. Julian Sterling had launched a ruthless legal campaign behind closed doors, contesting the validity of the DNA tests and claiming that Arthur was committing corporate fraud to retain power.

One afternoon, Arthur’s head of security, Marcus, pulled Arthur into his private office. “Sir, we’ve intercepted suspicious communications,” Marcus said grimly, placing a file on the mahogany desk. “Sterling has hired private investigators to dig into Leo’s past in the Industrial District. More concerning, recent surveillance shows unfamiliar vehicles parked near the estate gates.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened. “He’s desperate. He knows that once the probate court validates Leo’s status on Friday, his hostile takeover attempt is dead.”

“We need to increase security around the children, Mr. Vance,” Marcus advised sternly. “Desperate men do desperate things.”

Arthur looked out the window down at the garden, where Leo was patiently teaching Lily how to throw a colorful rubber ball. The sight filled Arthur with a fierce, protective wrath. He had lost his wife, and nearly lost his daughter. He would burn his entire fortune to the ground before allowing anyone to harm the children who had restored light to his soul.
