Headlines in local newspapers and luxury lifestyle magazines speculated wildly about the orphan boy whom Arthur Vance had adopted into his inner circle. Some called it a divine blessing; others, driven by cynicism, alleged it was a staged publicity stunt designed to boost Vance Enterprise’s soaring stock values.
At a high-profile charity luncheon hosted at the city's country club, Arthur stood firm against the prying inquiries of wealthy elite investors. Sitting beside him were Lily, who was now practicing walking with silver arm-crutches, and Leo, dressed in a custom-tailored navy suit.
Julian Sterling, a rival real estate developer with cold eyes and a calculating smile, walked over to Arthur’s table, holding a glass of champagne. “Arthur, old friend,” Sterling sneered softly, glancing down at Leo. “I hear you’ve taken in a street beggar. Charming PR strategy, I must admit. But aren’t you worried about where this child came from? Who knows what corrupting influence an unschooled street kid might bring into your refined household?”
Before Arthur could angrily respond, Lily spoke up, her voice ringing clearly across the quiet dining room. “Leo didn’t corrupt our home, Mr. Sterling. He cleaned the sadness out of it.”
