Chapter 7: The First Steps

Unaware of the gathering corporate storms, life inside the Vance residence reached a momentous milestone. The rehab clinic was quiet as sunlight filtered through large open blinds. Lily stood between two parallel wooden support bars, her small hands gripping the rails tightly. Dr. Harrison and Arthur watched from a few feet away, holding their breath.
Leo stood at the far end of the parallel bars, holding out a wooden toy horse they had painted together the previous week. “Come on, Lily,” Leo encouraged with a warm, steady smile. “Just five steps. You can do it.”
Lily took a deep, trembling breath. Her leg muscles twitched, fighting against three years of disuse and fear. Slowly, deliberately, she lifted her right foot and placed it forward. One.
Arthur gripped his knuckles until they turned white. Lily swayed slightly, her face tight with exertion, but she focused entirely on Leo’s encouraging eyes. She took another step. Two. Then another. Three.
On the fourth step, her left knee buckled. She gasped and began to tilt sideways. Before Arthur could jump forward, Leo moved with uncanny speed, stepping inside the bars and catching her beneath her arms before she touched the floor.
“I got you,” Leo whispered gently, holding her weight until she regained her balance.

Lily didn’t cry. Instead, she let out a triumphant burst of laughter, pushing herself upright while leaning on Leo’s shoulder. “I walked four steps, Daddy! Did you see?”
Arthur covered his face with his hands, tears streaming freely through his fingers. “I saw, my love. I saw.” He walked over and wrapped both children in a powerful embrace. In that small rehabilitation room, a battle had been won not through medical coldness, but through love, persistence, and unwavering companionship.
