Chapter 6

Morning sunlight filtered through the frosted glass windows of the municipal courthouse, casting pale geometric shapes across the wooden benches of the gallery. Clara sat in the front row beside her newly appointed pro bono attorney, Sarah Jenkins, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair and an unyielding demeanor. Clara wore a simple navy blue blazer and white blouse, a stark visual departure from the velvet dress she had worn the night of the incident. Across the aisle, seated behind the defense table, Julian and Eleanor Sterling looked remarkably diminished in their standard-issue holding facility jumpsuits. The absence of designer clothes and tailored suits stripped away their aristocratic veneer, exposing them as ordinary individuals facing extraordinary legal consequences. Eleanor stared straight ahead with a look of stony defiance, refusing to meet Clara’s gaze, while Julian nervously tapped his fingers against the polished oak table, his eyes darting frantically toward the gallery doors. The bailiff’s booming voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Vance—no relation to the plaintiff," the bailiff added quickly with a faint smirk. Judge Vance adjusted his spectacles, scanning the dense stack of legal documents before him with a deeply critical expression. He looked up, his gaze sweeping over the courtroom before resting squarely on the defense table. "Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling," the judge began, his voice deep and resonant. "You are facing multiple felony charges, including domestic abuse, physical assault, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment. The prosecution has submitted extensive digital evidence, including real-time audio and biometric logs from the victim's wearable device, which corroborate a persistent pattern of abuse and an escalation to physical violence." Julian stood up quickly, his voice cracking slightly. "Your Honor, that evidence was illegally obtained without our consent in our own home! It’s a complete invasion of privacy!" Judge Vance leveled a piercing stare at Julian. "Mr. Sterling, a smartwatch recording a violent assault in a public or semi-public domestic space where a child's safety is actively threatened does not violate privacy laws; it constitutes an undeniable cry for help and a legitimate record of a crime. Furthermore, your counsel had better adjust their strategy, because the court has already reviewed the footage, and it is entirely admissible." Eleanor flinched visibly at the judge's words, realizing for the first time that their wealth could not buy them out of this courtroom. Sarah Jenkins leaned over to whisper to Clara, "We’ve won the initial battle. Now we focus on securing permanent custody and restraining orders." Clara nodded, feeling the steady rhythm of her own heartbeat. The law was finally working.
