SILENT WITNESS / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2

The wail of the sirens grew sharper, bouncing off the high stone walls of the Sterling compound like an approaching judgment. Julian remained on the polished marble floor, his tailored grey suit dusted with fine white marble powder from where he had collided with the pillar. He looked up at Clara with a mixture of disbelief and seething rage, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to process the digital trap that had just snapped shut around him. Eleanor, recovering from her initial shock, dropped her hands to her sides, her posture stiffening back into the haughty rigidity that had defined her social standing for decades. "You planned this," Eleanor hissed, her voice a low, venomous whisper that barely carried across the echoing ballroom. "You manipulated every single second from the moment you walked through those double doors." Clara stood up slowly, ensuring Leo remained secure and undisturbed against her shoulder. The scratch on her cheek throbbed, a permanent physical reminder of the abuse she had endured behind closed doors for over two years, but her eyes were entirely steady. "I documented the truth, Eleanor," Clara replied, her tone remarkably even. "You thought wealth and status made you untouchable. You thought silence was something you could buy." Outside, the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the towering stained-glass windows in rhythmic, urgent strokes. Heavy boots pounded against the gravel pathway leading to the main entrance, followed by the authoritative rap of knuckles against the heavy oak doors. Julian scrambled to his feet, smoothing down his tie with frantic, uncoordinated gestures, desperate to reclaim an aura of control that was already entirely gone. "Listen to me, Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, placating register that made her stomach turn. "We can settle this inside the family. We don't need outsiders tearing our lives apart." Clara looked at him with profound pity. "The Sterling family died the moment you decided my son was just another asset to control." The heavy oak doors burst open, and uniformed officers flooded into the grand ballroom, led by a tall, middle-aged detective with a grim expression. The digital evidence had already arrived at their precinct terminals, and the nightmare for the Sterling dynasty had officially begun.
