Chapter 1

The mahogany chandelier of the Sterling estate cast long, fractured shadows across the imported Italian marble floor. Clara Vance lay half-supported by her left elbow, her dark red velvet dress pooling around her like spilled wine. In her arms, six-month-old Leo stirred, his tiny white onesie rising and falling with soft, rhythmic breaths. A sharp, stinging scratch burned across Clara’s left cheek, tracing the path where Eleanor Sterling’s diamond rings had grazed her skin moments earlier. Eleanor stood over her, chest heaving beneath a dark blue off-the-shoulder dress, her short blonde hair slightly disheveled from the sudden burst of aristocratic fury. Across the room, Julian Sterling, impeccably tailored in a charcoal grey suit and silk tie, took a deliberate step forward, his hand outstretched to retrieve the infant. Clara’s leg shot out with cold, calculated precision, her heel catching Julian square in the shin. He grunted, stumbling back against a fluted marble pillar, his face twisting in sudden agony. Eleanor gasped, her jaw dropping open in an exaggerated O of utter disbelief, staring at the woman she had spent years trying to break. But Clara did not cower. Clutching the baby tighter against her chest, she raised her left wrist. The sleek glass face of her smartwatch glowed faintly in the dim evening light, broadcasting a live data stream straight to a secure cloud server. Looking directly into the invisible lens of justice, Clara spoke with a quiet, terrifying steel in her voice. “Every word, every move, the police already have it.” Julian groaned from the floor, clutching his bruised leg as the reality of the digital trail hit him. “Who did you just message?” he choked out, his eyes wide with a sudden, paralyzing panic. Clara did not answer him. She simply adjusted Leo, who whimpered softly, and listened to the distant, rising wail of approaching sirens cutting through the heavy midnight air outside the gates.
