Chapter 7

Amy remained frozen on the rug, the manila folder resting on the coffee table between them like an unexploded ordnance. The numbers on the photocopied ledger stared back at her with brutal clarity. Millions of dollars in real estate holdings, commercial portfolios, and liquid assets—all belonging to the estate of her late parents, funneled quietly through shell corporations bearing names she didn't recognize, ultimately landing in a master trust controlled entirely by Helen Vance.
"I didn't want to bring it to the police," Sarah stammered, wringing her hands in her lap, the anxiety bleeding from every pore. "Statutes of limitations, high-priced corporate lawyers... Helen owns half the legal district in this city. She would have buried me before I ever saw a courtroom. But when I saw you standing up to her at the sink the other night—through the kitchen window, I was walking past—I realized you aren't the quiet, broken girl she thought she bought."
Amy’s mind raced, synthesizing the shock into a cold, hard focus. The vulnerability she had felt just days ago evaporated, replaced by a fierce, maternal protectiveness. They had tried to trap her, had treated her life as a ledger entry, but they had underestimated her resilience. "Does Connor know?" she asked, her voice remarkably calm, though her hands trembled slightly as she touched the edge of the folder.
Sarah shook her head emphatically. "No. Helen kept him entirely in the dark about the financial mechanics of the merger. She wanted him to believe you were a sweet, impoverished orphan she had generously taken under her wing, so he would feel a sense of eternal indebtedness to her. If Connor found out his mother stole your birthright to engineer his life, it would shatter him."
"It has to shatter him," Amy said quietly, her eyes locking onto Sarah’s. "Secrets like this are the foundation of her entire empire. If we keep hiding them to protect his feelings, we are just maintaining her prison from the inside."
Sarah looked away, biting her lower lip. "What are you going to do? Helen has already started retaliating against Connor at the firm. Arthur Vance called a special board meeting this morning. They’re reviewing his partnership track."

"Let them review it," Amy said, standing up with a newfound authority that made Sarah look up in awe. "Connor is fighting his battles in the boardroom based on honor. We are going to fight ours with the truth."
Just then, the front door clicked open and footsteps echoed in the hallway. Connor walked into the living room, loosening his tie as he tossed his briefcase onto the entryway table. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Sarah sitting on the sofa, her eyes wide with panic, and Amy standing beside the coffee table holding the manila folder. The air in the room grew instantly dense with tension, every unspoken secret hanging suspended between them like smoke.
