Chapter 13

The days following the board meeting brought a strange, tranquil quiet to the household. The media inquiries regarding the Vance Family Holding Trust were handled swiftly by corporate legal counsel, and the regulatory commission’s preliminary findings confirmed what Sarah’s documents had proven: millions in assets rightfully belonging to Amy’s inheritance had been systematically diverted over a period of decades. Helen had retreated entirely to her secluded estate, refusing visitors and cutting off all communication with her former social circle, effectively erasing herself from the landscape she had once dominated.
On a bright Saturday morning, sunlight flooded the kitchen as Amy prepared breakfast. There was no rush, no looming guest list, no frantic preparations for a high-society dinner party. She wore a simple linen sundress, her hair tied back in a loose, comfortable braid rather than the severe bun of her past captivity.
Connor walked in wearing a soft cotton t-shirt and jeans, carrying the baby against his chest in a comfortable fabric carrier. The infant was awake, staring up at him with wide, curious eyes while clutching a corner of the blue blanket. Connor smiled, kissing the top of the baby’s head before walking over to wrap his arms around Amy’s waist as she flipped a pancake on the skillet.
"You smell amazing," Connor murmured, kissing her cheek. "And the house... it feels different. Lighter."
"That’s just the sound of no hidden agendas," Amy laughed softly, turning around in his embrace to hand him a spatula. "Here, flip these while I make the coffee. My parents would have loved this kitchen, Connor. They would have loved seeing us actually live in it."
"I wish you had known them better," Connor said, his voice carrying a tinge of lingering sadness for the past they had both lost. "If my mother hadn't intervened after the accident... things could have been so different."
"Maybe," Amy mused, leaning against the counter with her mug of coffee. "Or maybe we wouldn't be who we are right now. Pain leaves a mark, Connor, but it also shows us where our true strength lies. I wouldn't trade the woman I’ve become for anything in the world."
Connor looked at her with a deep, fierce adoration. He realized that the woman standing before him was not the quiet, fragile girl his mother had attempted to break. She was a survivor, a mother, and an equal partner who had stared down a dynasty and emerged victorious.

"I love you, Amy," Connor said, his voice entirely devoid of hesitation or restraint. "Thank you for staying. Thank you for waking me up."
"I love you too, Connor," she replied, stepping into his arms and resting her head against his chest, right over the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "Now, help me make sure these pancakes don't burn. Some of us actually have to eat breakfast today."
