Chapter 8

The descent into the sub-basement of the Vance Industries building felt like stepping into an entirely different world. Gone were the polished mahogany surfaces, the expansive glass walls, and the soft hum of quiet luxury; here, the air was cold, thick with the constant roar of industrial cooling fans and the rhythmic blinking of a thousand server rack lights. Shadows stretched long and distorted across the concrete floor as Elena led the way down the metal-grate staircase, her heels clicking sharply against the steps. Leo walked closely behind her, his small hand gripping the strap of his backpack, while David Vance followed at a slower pace, refusing to be left behind despite the strain on his aging joints. "Keep close," Elena whispered over the mechanical din, pulling a keycard from her pocket as they approached the reinforced steel door of the primary server room. The digital keypad beside the door glowed a faint amber. "Marcus would have changed the access codes for this floor, but my executive clearance override should still grant us emergency entry." Elena pressed her keycard against the reader and punched in her personal PIN code. For a tense second, the keypad flashed red, accompanied by an angry electronic buzz. Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "He’s already locked us out of the physical perimeter," she breathed, panic threatening to override her logic. Without missing a beat, Leo stepped forward, sliding past her with surprising agility. He reached up and tapped the maintenance panel located just beneath the keypad, unscrewing a small metal plate with a coin he pulled from his pocket. "Mom said the security contractors were lazy," Leo said, his voice calm amidst the deafening roar of the fans. "They never updated the emergency analog bypass wired into the old fire suppression system." With nimble fingers, Leo pulled a loose colored wire from the housing and touched it briefly against a grounding screw. A loud mechanical click echoed through the corridor, and the keypad suddenly flashed a brilliant, welcoming green. The heavy steel door popped open with a hiss of pressurized air. "After you," Leo said politely, gesturing for Elena to step inside. They slipped into the chilled sanctuary of the server room, the door sealing shut behind them and cutting off the worst of the external noise. Rows upon rows of black server racks stretched out before them, their indicator lights blinking in frantic synchronization. "The master terminal is at the end of aisle four," Elena directed, scanning the overhead signs. But as they rounded the corner toward the central console, a tall shadow detached itself from the end of the aisle, blocking their path. Marcus Sterling stood waiting for them, a cold, predatory smile playing across his lips as he held a portable administrative tablet in his hand.
