Chapter 10

The harsh fluorescent lights of the corporate lobby flickered as the early morning sun finally broke through the towering glass facade of Vance Industries, casting long, clean rays across the polished marble floor. Federal investigators in dark suits and local police officers moved methodically through the building, escorting shaken executives and cataloging digital evidence seized from the server room downstairs. Marcus Sterling sat quietly on a wooden bench near the main security desk, his hands cuffed loosely behind his back, flanked by two federal agents waiting for the transport vehicle to arrive. His once-imposing demeanor had entirely evaporated, replaced by a defeated silence as he stared fixedly at the floor. Up on the executive floor, the heavy atmosphere of dread had lifted, replaced by an exhausted but palpable sense of relief. Elena Vance stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of her office, watching the city wake up beneath a clear, pale blue sky. Her gray blazer was gone, replaced by a simple black top, and her hair, though still tied back in its neat bun, felt significantly lighter. David Vance sat at the conference table, reviewing the preliminary restoration roadmap drafted by the emergency legal team. "The SEC has agreed to grant us full corporate immunity in exchange for our complete cooperation and immediate restructuring," David announced, looking up over his glasses with a tired, genuine smile. "The stolen pension funds are already being tracked for repatriation. Vance Industries is going to survive this, Elena. More importantly, it’s going to survive with its soul intact." Elena turned away from the window and walked toward the center of the room, where Leo sat quietly in the same chair he had occupied during their initial confrontation days ago. The boy was calmly packing his schoolbooks back into his backpack, preparing for a normal day of classes as if he hadn't just helped dismantle a multi-million-dollar corporate conspiracy. Elena walked over, kneeling down slightly so she was eye-level with the boy. "Your mother’s name has been officially cleared across all corporate records, Leo," Elena said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "Her pension and full posthumous honors will be restored by the board this afternoon." Leo looked up, a small, genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time since the ordeal began. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small black voice recorder, placing it gently on the coffee table between them. "Mom always said the truth has a way of finding the light," Leo said quietly, zipping up his backpack. "It just needed someone to give it a little push."
