Chapter 8 - Red and Blue Reflections

The strobe-like glare of the police cruisers danced across the high-end furnishings, casting long, writhing shadows over the chandelier and the velvet sofa. Sarah dropped Maya’s wrist, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second as she stared at the flashing lights slicing through the front windows. She spun around, her black button-down shirt rustling sharply as she rushed toward the master suite, her heels clicking a frantic, hurried rhythm against the hardwood floor.

Maya didn’t hesitate. Ignoring the pain in her bruised wrists, she scrambled down the stairs, her black school shoes skidding across the polished floorboards before she dropped to her knees beside her father.

“Daddy! Daddy, wake up!” Maya sobbed, pressing her small hands against Marcus’s chest. He was breathing, a shallow, ragged rattle that hitched in his throat, but his eyes remained rolled back, unresponsive to her desperate cries. The dark stain on his temple continued to spread, soaking into the fibers of his expensive brown suit.

Heavy boots crunched on the gravel outside, followed by the urgent rapping of knuckles against the front door and the booming voice of authority.

“Police! Open the door! We received a 911 dispatch regarding a violent altercation at this address!”

Before Maya could crawl toward the heavy deadbolt, the door burst inward, splintering the mahogany frame as three armed officers in tactical gear flooded the luxury foyer. Flashlights cut through the dim amber light, their blinding beams sweeping across the room until one locked directly onto Maya kneeling beside her bleeding father.

“Hold your position! Officer down, officer down, I need a rig at the front entrance immediately!” a sharp voice barked into a shoulder radio, echoing off the high ceilings.

Maya looked up through her tears, the blinding lights forcing her to squint as a female detective knelt beside her, gently pulling the child away from Marcus’s bleeding form.

“Sweetheart, look at me,” the detective said, her voice firm yet laced with professional compassion. “Who else is in this house? Where is the woman who lives here?”

Maya pointed a trembling finger up toward the dark second-floor landing where Sarah had vanished just moments ago.

“She’s in Mummy’s room,” Maya cried out, her voice cracking. “She’s wearing Mummy’s clothes, and she has the box with all the secrets!”

The detective’s expression hardened instantly. She signaled two tactical officers toward the grand staircase, but as they rushed upward, a loud crash echoed from the back of the house, followed by the shattering glass of a second-story window.
