Chapter 14 - The Voice from the Treeline “Don’t get in that car, Maya!”

The sharp, desperate shout sliced through the hum of the idling SUV engine like a razor blade. Elena froze mid-step, her hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath her trench coat. The two federal agents in dark suits instantly drew their sidearms, sweeping their flashlights across the dense, dark tree line that bordered the gravel driveway.

From the shadows of an ancient oak tree, a figure stumbled forward into the harsh glare of the SUV’s headlights. It was Marcus. His brown suit jacket was torn and stained with dried blood, his well-groomed beard disheveled, and his wrists wrapped in the remnants of a shattered plastic zip-tie. He had escaped the transport unit.

“Marcus,” Elena hissed, her voice dropping into a lethal, venomous register as she leveled her firearm directly at his chest. “You are violating federal custody. Take one more step and you will be terminated on site.”

Marcus ignored her entirely, his wild, desperate eyes locked solely on his daughter standing by the rear door of the vehicle.

“Maya, listen to me!” Marcus screamed, ignoring the gun pointed straight at his heart as he lurged forward another step. “She’s not a federal agent! That badge is forged! She’s the one who orchestrated the whole thing—she’s an international asset thief, and she killed my real wife three years ago to steal this entire estate!”

The two tactical agents looked back and forth between Marcus and Elena, their professional discipline fracturing under the weight of the explosive accusation.

Elena didn’t flinch. Her finger tightened slightly on the trigger guard of her weapon, her face an unreadable mask of absolute coldness.

“He’s delusional, suffering from severe head trauma and acute paranoia resulting from the altercation,” Elena announced, her voice steady and authoritative, designed to override the rising panic of the guards. “Eliminate the threat. He’s a fugitive resisting arrest.”

“No!” Maya cried out, throwing down her duffel bag and darting forward between the armed guards, planting herself directly in the line of fire between Elena and her father. “Stop it! Both of you stop it!”

Marcus lunged forward, desperately reaching out a hand toward his daughter, his eyes filled with a terrifying, agonizing realization. “Maya, run! She doesn’t care about the agency! She’s taking you to the—”

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, a blinding flash ripped through the darkness, accompanied by a deafening crack that echoed across the quiet estate grounds.

Marcus staggered backward, his eyes widening in shock as a dark crimson stain bloomed rapidly across the chest of his torn brown suit. He collapsed heavily onto the gravel, his fingers twitching once before going entirely still.
