Chapter 5 - The Intruder at the Threshold

The loud crash reverberated through the hollow halls of the luxury estate, shaking the crystal chandelier downstairs and sending a sharp echo up the stairwell. Marcus froze, the color draining entirely from his well-groomed face, leaving him looking ghost-white beneath the amber lighting. Sarah’s triumphant smirk vanished in an instant, replaced by a mask of cold, calculating fury as she snatched the velvet jewelry box off the dresser and shoved it behind her back.

“Stay here,” Marcus hissed, his voice dropping to a panicked whisper as he bolted out of the master suite and rushed toward the landing, his brown suit jacket flapping behind him.

Maya didn’t listen. Slipping past the edge of the doorway, she crept down the hallway, keeping her small body pressed tightly against the dark wood paneling. Peering over the curved mahogany banister, she looked down into the grand foyer. Standing near the entrance was a tall man in a rumpled trench coat, his shoulders heaving as he caught his breath. In his hand, he clutched a bulky manila folder that looked battered and water-damaged.

“You can’t keep hiding out here, Marcus!” the man shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “The bank flagged the asset transfers weeks ago. And the county coroner just reopened the drowning investigation. They found irregularities in the toxicology report from the river recovery site!”

Marcus lunged forward, grabbing the man by the lapels of his coat and shoving him back toward the heavy oak front door. “Shut your mouth!” Marcus roared, his face contorted in a rage Maya had never witnessed in all her six years of life. “Are you out of your mind shouting about that here? The child is upstairs!”

“The child is the least of our problems!” the man yelled, tearing himself free from Marcus’s grip and holding up a sheaf of papers. “Sarah isn’t who you think she is, and she certainly isn’t protecting you. She’s liquidated the primary accounts, Marcus! The house, the stocks, the offshore trusts—it’s all in her maiden name now! You traded your wife for a professional grifter, and she’s about to leave you with nothing!”

Upstairs, standing in the shadows of the landing, Maya felt her breath catch in her throat. She looked back over her shoulder and saw Sarah standing silently right behind her, holding a heavy glass vase.
