Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest at the Gate

The smart-home speaker emitted a loud, piercing chime before a harsh, static-filled voice echoed from the driveway intercom downstairs.

"Attention property owners. This is Federal Marshal Vance. The perimeter is sealed. Nobody leaves the grounds."

Elena froze, the color draining entirely from her face. She looked up at Clara with wide, uncomprehending eyes. "Vance? That... that's my maiden name. How does a federal marshal have my maiden name?"

Clara didn't answer immediately. She walked slowly over to the master bedroom window, parting the heavy blinds just enough to look down at the gravel driveway below. Two black SUVs blocked the front entrance, their emergency lights flashing a hypnotic red and blue against the manicured hedges. Several agents in heavy tactical gear had already surrounded the perimeter, their weapons drawn and aimed directly at the house.

"Your brother has been very busy looking for you, Elena," Clara said smoothly, her eyes reflecting the flashing lights outside. "Or rather, he’s been looking for the money you both inherited from your father's estate five years ago. The money David used to fund his little real estate empire."

Elena stumbled to her feet, clutching the golden silk robe tightly around her chest. "That's impossible. My brother cut ties with me when I moved in here. He doesn't even know where I live!"

"People tend to update their addresses when millions of dollars suddenly clear into an offshore account bearing their family surname," Clara replied without turning around. She let the blinds snap back into place, plunging the room back into the harsh horizontal slices of morning light.

From the hallway downstairs, the heavy tramping of boots announced the arrival of more officers, but these ones weren't wearing local precinct patches. They wore crisp federal windbreakers with bold yellow lettering across the back. A tall, broad-shouldered man with iron-gray hair and piercing blue eyes marched up the stairs, pushing past the local police officers stationed at the doorway.

Marshal Vance stepped into the master bedroom, his gaze scanning the ruined floor, the shattered cereal bowls, and finally landing on Elena. His face was carved from stone, completely devoid of familial warmth or pity.

"Elena," Marshal Vance said, his voice deep and cutting like a whip. "It took us three weeks to untangle the web you and your lover wove, but tax evasion and wire fraud leave a very distinct paper trail."

Elena backed away until her spine hit the opposite wall, her breathing turning hyperventilated. "Lucas... you can't be here. David said—"

"David lied to you about everything, little sister," Lucas interrupted, stepping further into the room. He pulled a folded document from his breast pocket and snapped it open. "He used your offshore accounts as a buffer to hide the embezzlement of Clara’s family trust. The moment the feds traced the money, you became his primary accomplice."

Elena let out a sharp, breathless cry, sliding down the wall until she sat in a crumpled heap on the floor, her golden robe pooling around her like liquid metal. "I didn't know! He told me it was clean money! He said Clara abandoned us!"

Lucas didn't even glance down at his sister. His hard blue eyes shifted past her, finally locking onto Clara, who stood calmly beside little Lily. Marshal Vance offered a stiff, respectful nod to the woman in the beige robe.

"Thank you for cooperating with the sting operation, Mrs. Miller," Marshal Vance said formally. "The federal freeze on all Miller assets is now in full effect."

Clara nodded slowly, a faint, bittersweet smile touching her lips. "I told you, Marshal. My husband always left the back door unlocked."

Marshal Vance turned back toward the hallway, raising his radio to give the order for a complete sweep of the property. But before he could speak, a violent crash echoed from the master bathroom, followed by the sound of breaking glass and heavy footsteps fleeing toward the second-story balcony.
