Chapter 12 - The Descent to Vault B

The electronic chime echoed sharply through the master bedroom, followed by the deep, resonant clunk of heavy hydraulic bolts unsealing somewhere deep beneath the floorboards. Marshal Vance paused in the hallway just outside the door, his hand gripping David’s shoulder while his eyes darted back toward the bedroom.

"What was that?" Vance demanded, his voice sharp with suspicion. "We secured the perimeter. No one else has access codes to the sub-level."

Clara stepped out into the hallway, her beige robe moving gracefully around her ankles as she walked past the federal agents. She didn't look back at David, nor did she acknowledge Elena, who remained huddled in a terrified heap on the floor inside the bedroom.

"The house has more than one way to clear its accounts, Marshal," Clara replied smoothly, her footsteps echoing softly against the hardwood as she walked toward the grand staircase leading down to the foyer. "Come. It’s time you saw what my husband kept behind Vault B."

Marshal Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, then shoved David forward into the custody of two waiting tactical officers. "Hold him by the squad car. Do not let him out of your sight." Vance then drew his service weapon, flicking on his tactical flashlight, and fell into step right behind Clara.

As they descended the grand staircase, the air grew noticeably colder, dropping rapidly from the warm morning temperature of the upper level to the damp, biting chill of a subterranean crypt. The walls of the stairwell, previously lined with expensive family portraits and modern art, were now bare, stripped down to raw, gray concrete panels that sweat with heavy condensation.

"He built this wing while I was away on business trips," Clara explained casually, her voice echoing off the concrete walls as she led the way down. "He told me it was just a storm shelter. A safe room for Lily in case of an emergency."

"And instead, it was a tomb," Vance stated grimly, his flashlight beam sweeping across the heavy iron-reinforced door at the end of the basement corridor.

The door to Vault B stood wide open, its massive steel locking mechanisms retracted into the frame. From inside the dark, cavernous space, a faint blue glow emanated, casting long, eerie shadows against the damp stone floor. A soft, rhythmic dripping sound—*drip, drip, drip*—echoed from the darkness within, rhythmic and relentless like a ticking clock.

Clara stopped directly at the threshold of the vault, her face illuminated by the eerie blue light spilling from inside. She turned her head slightly to look back at Marshal Vance, a faint, melancholic smile touching her lips.

"He thought if he locked the past away, it would eventually turn to dust," Clara whispered softly. "He didn't realize that some things only grow stronger in the dark."

Marshal Vance raised his weapon, stepping cautiously past her into the chilled interior of the vault. The beam of his flashlight cut through the blue gloom, illuminating rows of steel shelves stacked high with locked metal briefcases, digitized hard drives, and—resting on a steel table in the center of the room—a single, undisturbed ceramic bowl of dry cereal and a silver spoon.

Vance froze, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the bowl. He slowly turned his head to look back at Clara, a profound, chilling horror dawning in his eyes.

"Clara," Vance whispered, his voice trembling for the first time. "You weren't rescued from that house three weeks ago... were you?"

May you like

Before Clara could answer, the heavy steel door behind them slammed shut with a thunderous roar, and the hydraulic locks engaged automatically, sealing them both inside the vault in absolute, inescapable darkness.
