Chapter 10 - Darkness in the Master Suite

The sudden blackout swallowed the room whole, snuffing out the horizontal slices of morning light as if an invisible hand had pulled heavy iron shutters over the windows. Lily whimpered softly in the dark, her small arms wrapping tightly around Clara’s waist.
"Mommy, it's too dark," the little girl whispered, her voice shaking with sudden terror.
"I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm not going anywhere," Clara’s voice echoed steady and calm through the pitch-black space, a stark contrast to the rising panic around her.
A sharp metallic click echoed near the doorway, followed by the heavy rasp of a shoe scraping against the floor. Marshal Vance cursed under his breath, the beam of his tactical flashlight suddenly cutting through the gloom, casting a harsh, blinding white circle across the ruined floorboards. The beam swept wildly across the room, illuminating overturned cereal bowls, scattered glass shards, and the crumpled form of Elena still huddled against the wall.
"Stay back! Identify yourself!" Vance barked, keeping his flashlight trained on the doorway while his other hand hovered near his service weapon.
The beam of light caught a figure standing squarely in the center of the doorway. It wasn't an intruder, nor was it a federal agent. It was David.
He was still wearing his rumpled black suit, but the handcuffs were gone, dangling loosely from his right wrist like broken silver chains. His dark hair was matted with sweat and dirt, and his eyes bulged with a frantic, animalistic desperation. He held a heavy, brass fireplace poker lifted high in his right hand, the metal glinting menacingly in the flashlight beam.
"You think a flash drive can save you?" David screamed, his voice cracking violently as he lunged forward into the room, bypassing Marshal Vance with terrifying speed.
Marshal Vance reacted instantly, lunging to intercept him, but David swung the heavy brass poker with blind fury, striking Vance across the shoulder and sending the federal agent crashing hard into the antique dresser. The flashlight flew from Vance’s grip, clattering across the floor and casting erratic, spinning shadows against the walls.
Clara didn't flinch. She pushed Lily gently behind her, standing tall and unmoving as David closed the distance between them, his face twisted into a grotesque mask of rage and terror.
"You ruined everything!" David shrieked, raising the poker high above his head to strike. "If I'm going down, you're coming with me this time! No more games, Clara! No more tricks!"
Clara took one deliberate step forward into the sweeping beam of the rolling flashlight on the floor. Her eyes locked onto David’s with an absolute, terrifying serenity that stopped him dead in his tracks.
"You never understood, David," Clara whispered, her voice cutting through the ringing silence of the room. "You can't kill what never truly lived in your world."

Before David could bring the poker down, the floorboards beneath his feet groaned loudly, and a sudden, violent shudder ripped through the entire foundation of the house, throwing him off balance and sending him crashing heavily onto the broken glass.
