Chapter 14 - The Final Visitor

The quiet footsteps echoing across the marble foyer carried an easy, unhurried rhythm that commanded immediate attention. Clara stood beside the quartz kitchen island, her hand lingering near the heavy wooden baseball bat just in case the night had one final violent surprise waiting in the shadows. Sarah scrambled up from the floor, wiping her face and smoothing out her black-and-white maid's uniform into a semblance of professional order.

A tall, impeccably dressed man stepped into the brightly lit kitchen. He wore a charcoal-grey tailored suit that rivaled Marcus’s finest attire, but his demeanor was entirely different—calm, unthreatening, and bearing the quiet authority of someone accustomed to holding absolute power. He pinned a small silver federal badge to the lapel of his jacket as he stopped near the edge of the sealed sub-level hatch.

"Good evening, Mrs. Vance," the man said smoothly, offering a polite, professional nod. "I am Director Henderson with the Federal Oversight Commission. I believe you have been expecting us."

Clara studied him closely, her instincts still razor-sharp from the harrowing events of the evening. "You took your time getting here, Director. The local precinct and Marcus’s private operatives had almost enough time to rewrite history."

Director Henderson offered a wry, knowing smile, stepping past the sealed hatch without a trace of apprehension. "Bureaucracy moves slowly, Mrs. Vance, especially when an entire regional infrastructure has been compromised by shadow corporations like the one Eleanor and your husband managed. But your emergency transponder signal changed the timeline completely. The encrypted files you preserved are currently downloading to our primary servers as we speak."

Sarah let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning against the pantry wall. "So it's finally over. The network is dismantled?"

"The network is dismantled," Henderson confirmed, pulling a thick manila folder from under his arm and placing it neatly on the quartz countertop. "Marcus Vance will face multiple federal indictments with no possibility of bail. Eleanor and her associates will be spending the rest of their natural lives in a maximum-security facility. As for the estate and the assets Marcus tried to siphon away—they have been frozen under emergency receivership."

Henderson paused, shifting his gaze from Sarah to Clara. He slid the manila folder an inch closer across the pristine surface.
