Chapter 12 - The Turn in the Dark

The sudden, clinical click of the silenced firearm echoed sharply through the modern kitchen, cutting off Eleanor’s chilling monologue mid-sentence. The aristocratic composure that had defined the executive director’s demeanor shattered instantly. Eleanor froze mid-step, her green eyes darting toward the dark staircase as the tall figure stepped fully into the harsh LED light.

It was Viktor—the scarred operative who had supposedly been subdued and arrested by the federal tactical team just moments earlier. His clothes were slightly scuffed, and a thin line of dried blood stained the collar of his tactical sweater, but his grip on the weapon was rock-steady and absolute.

Sarah let out a muffled scream, stumbling backward against the pantry wall. "You... how are you out of the handcuffs? The federal agents took you out through the foyer!"

Viktor offered a grim, humorless smirk, keeping the barrel of the silenced weapon trained squarely between Eleanor’s shoulder blades. "Federal agents are easily confused when the entire local precinct is on your payroll, Sarah. Marcus was a liability, but Eleanor here was always the primary target. The board decided hours ago that her oversight had become a liability to our international partners."

Eleanor slowly turned her head, her face pale with fury as she glared at the scarred operative. "You traitorous dog. The board answers to me. Without my clearance codes, those server drives down there will auto-destruct and wipe every offshore asset off the grid permanently."

"Let them burn," Viktor muttered coldly, pressing the barrel a fraction of an inch closer. "My employers prefer a clean slate anyway. Hands where I can see them, Eleanor. Interrogation is over."

Clara stood frozen, holding sleeping Lily tightly against her shoulder while her right hand maintained a vice grip on the heavy wooden baseball bat. The nightmare was shifting shapes faster than she could track, transforming from a domestic betrayal into a ruthless corporate war happening right inside her kitchen. Every alliance was temporary; every enemy was wearing a mask of civility until the very end.

"You're not wiping anything, and you're not executing anyone in my house," Clara said, her voice cutting through the tension with icy, razor-sharp authority.

Viktor glanced sideways at Clara, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his scarred features. "I admire your nerve, Mrs. Vance, truly I do. But this isn't your world anymore. Step back into the hallway with the child, let the professionals finish the execution, and you might actually survive the night."

"You assume I want to survive by hiding," Clara replied, stepping forward with deliberate slowness. She didn't raise the bat to strike; instead, she lowered it until the heavy wooden end rested lightly against the tiled floor, right over the pneumatic release valve of the sub-level hatch.

Eleanor’s eyes widened in sudden panic as she realized what Clara was doing. "Don't you dare—if you trigger that release, the entire subterranean vault will seal itself permanently with us inside!"

"Good," Clara whispered, a dark, fierce smile touching her lips. "Then nobody leaves."

With a swift, powerful stomp of her heel, Clara triggered the pneumatic floor valve. The massive hydraulic hatch beneath Viktor and Eleanor instantly dropped three inches with a deafening, metallic snap, sending both operatives stumbling backward into the dark abyss of the sub-level stairs.
