Chapter 3: The Anatomy of a Setup

Julian did not look away from the phone screen until the video loop ended and the display flickered to a blank, dark slate. The reflection of his own unblinking eyes stared back at him from the glass. He slowly lifted his head, his gaze shifting past Clara’s trembling hands to fix upon Elena, who stood frozen by the mahogany table. Elena’s chest rose and fell rapidly beneath the shimmering fabric of her evening dress, her initial theatrical outrage now curdling into a palpable, cold panic as she realized the security footage had circumvented her careful deletion protocols.
""Clara,"" Julian said, his voice remarkably steady, devoid of panic or surprise, carrying the low, resonant timbre of a man accustomed to issuing commands that altered corporate destinies. ""Take a breath. Step back.""
Clara didn’t move. Her boots remained anchored to the patterned carpet, her bruised arm held protectively against her waist. ""Step back? Mr. Vance, she tried to kill you. Or she tried to frame me for it. I found the vial in the trash behind the bar twenty minutes ago. I checked the logs because she cornered me in the linen closet and bruised my arm to keep my mouth shut. Look at me!"" She thrust the phone closer again. ""This isn't a game. That drink is sitting right in front of you.""
Julian lowered his gaze to his own martini glass. The olive floated innocently in the center, a toothpick piercing its middle like a tiny, harmless spear. The ice bucket beside him shimmered, the American flag decal on its side peeling slightly at the corner—a cheap accessory in an expensive room. He had poured the drink himself from a sealed bottle at the private bar, but he had walked away to take a phone call regarding the quarterly audit. In that five-minute window, the trap had been laid.
Across the room, Elena forced a brittle, dismissive laugh, her voice carrying across the white-clothed tables. ""The girl is delusional, Julian. Look at her—she’s hysterical, probably stole a bottle from the cellar and concocted this digital fabrication to cover her tracks. Everyone knows the service staff here has been skimming accounts.""

The patrons at the adjacent tables murmured nervously, utensils clinking against china as heads turned to watch the drama unfold. Clara let out a sharp, incredulous sob, her tears renewed by the sheer audacity of the lie. She looked at Julian, silently begging the powerful man in the gray suit to possess an ounce of common sense, to see past the sparkling dress and the high-society veneer straight to the malice rotting beneath.
