Chapter 10: The Ledger of Sins

Detective Miller approached the table with a heavy, deliberate tread, his notepad already open and a pen poised in his thick fingers. He glanced between Julian Vance and the young waitress, noting the spatial distance they had established, the spilled gin on the white tablecloth, and the bruised arm visible beneath Clara’s rolled-up sleeve.

""Mrs. Vance has been secured in the transport unit,"" Miller announced, his voice gravelly and clinical. ""She’s singing an operatic aria of counter-accusations, claiming you embezzled twenty million dollars from the foundation’s endowment, Mr. Vance. She says the poison was intended for you as an act of self-defense against domestic abuse.""

Julian did not blink. He reached inside his gray suit jacket, withdrew a slim leather portfolio, and slid it across the white tablecloth toward the detective. ""The foundation’s accounts are clean, Detective. Every transaction is mirrored on the public blockchain. However, as for the domestic dynamic, I believe you’ll find the digital logs on this encrypted drive tell a very different story regarding the disappearance of my former assistant, Sarah Jenkins, eighteen months ago.""

Miller looked down at the slim metal flash drive resting on the leather portfolio. He picked it up with two fingers, inspecting it with the wariness of a man who knew that high-society evidence was often a double-edged sword. ""And who authorized the extraction of these files?""

""I did,"" Clara stepped forward, her voice ringing clear and resolute in the quiet room. She pointed to the smartphone still resting in her apron pocket. ""And I have the real-time security backup on my device. If anyone tries to wipe the sub-server logs tonight, the cryptographic hash will flag an automatic alert to the state cyber-crime division.""

Miller raised an eyebrow, looking at the young waitress with newfound respect. ""You’ve been busy tonight, young lady. What’s your name?""

""Clara Evans, Detective,"" she replied, holding her ground without flinching. ""I’m a banquet server here. Or at least, I was until twenty minutes ago.""

Miller chuckled darkly, tucking the flash drive into his coat pocket. ""Well, Ms. Evans, it looks like you’ve just secured a promotion to star witness. I’m going to need you both down at the precinct for a formal statement and a digital chain-of-custody handover.""

Julian stood up, smoothing his gray jacket once more. He looked at Clara, his expression softening by a fraction. ""My legal team will ensure your employment contract is settled with full severance, Clara. And your mother’s medical fund will be placed in an independent, irrevocable trust, completely separate from the Sterling estate.""

Clara looked at him, her jaw tight. ""I don't want your charity, Mr. Vance. I want justice for Sarah, and I want my life back.""
