Chapter 14: The Final Verdict

The testimony lasted four hours. Clara walked the court through every digital artifact, every security log, and every physical interaction from that fateful night at the banquet table. She described the bruised arm, the hidden vial, the cold calculation of the poison dropped into the martini olive, and the silent, complicit world of corporate survival that had allowed such violence to fester in the dark.

When the prosecutor handed her the smartphone containing the original security footage, Clara held it up, projecting the high-definition loop onto the courtroom’s central monitors. The silent video played for all to see: Elena’s hand hovering with the dropper, the single droplet breaking the surface of the gin, the pristine green olive resting at the bottom like a poisoned seed.

Elena’s defense attorneys objected twice on grounds of chain-of-custody, but Detective Miller’s rigorous digital fingerprinting shut the motions down immediately.

After a tense two-hour deliberation, the jury returned to the courtroom. The foreman stood, his face solemn, and read the verdict: *Guilty on all counts of premeditated attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful suppression of evidence.*

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Elena did not scream this time; she simply closed her eyes, her shoulders slumping as the heavy steel handcuffs were placed back on her wrists by the bailiff, mirroring the exact motion she had tried to inflict upon others. The illusion of her untouchable supremacy was shattered permanently.

Clara sat back in her wooden bench, letting out a long, slow breath that felt like shedding a skin. Beside her, Detective Miller gave her shoulder a firm, approving squeeze.

""Well done, Clara,"" Miller murmured. ""You just changed the rules of the game.""

Clara shook her head, watching as Elena was led out through the heavy wooden side doors. ""No, Detective,"" she whispered softly. ""I just stopped playing.""
