Chapter 10: The Reconciliation
The door to the maid’s room creaked open softly. Julian stepped inside, ducking his head beneath the low lintel. The room was warm, smelling faintly of chamomile tea and antiseptic. In the corner on the simple cot, Martha lay propped up against a stack of pillows, wrapped securely in heavy woolen blankets. Her pale face still bore the pale exhaustion of her ordeal, but her eyes were open, bright with quiet intelligence.
Elena stood respectfully by the foot of the bed, holding the empty ceramic mug. When she saw Julian enter, she quietly bowed her head and slipped out of the room, leaving mother and son alone in the sanctuary of the small space.
Julian dropped to his knees beside the cot, ignoring the dampness of his ruined trousers against the wooden floorboards. He took his mother’s frail, trembling hand in both of his, pressing her knuckles against his forehead. A sob broke through his composure, the tears he had held back all night finally spilling over.
"Mother... I am so sorry," Julian choked out, his voice cracking with profound grief and shame. "I brought her into this house. I left you unprotected. I failed you."
Martha slowly lifted her free hand, her arthritic fingers gently resting against her son’s wet cheek, wiping away a tear with a tender, maternal stroke. "Hush, my boy," she whispered, her voice raspy but steady. "A mother knows your heart. You were blinded by the belief in family. But a snake cannot change its skin, Julian. You see her clearly now. That is all that matters."

"She will never set foot in this house again," Julian vowed, his voice hardening with an unyielding resolve. "I am filing for immediate divorce, freezing all her access, and handing over every single document of her embezzlement to the district attorney. You are never going to be subjected to her cruelty again."
Martha nodded slowly, a serene, peaceful smile touching the corners of her mouth. "Good. Protect what is left, Julian. Not just the wealth, but our dignity."
