Chapter 1

The rain fell in sheets, driven by a sharp wind that stripped the last bruised leaves from the ancient oaks lining the grand estate. Clara stood at the top of the wet marble steps, her dark hair pulled back in a high ponytail, her expression hardened into a mask of pure fury. In her grip was a scuffed brown leather suitcase, its contents spilling slightly onto the stone. At her feet, seventy-two-year-old Martha stumbled backward, her pale face slick with rain, her thin graying hair plastered to her forehead. Martha wore a damp neutral cardigan, a dark skirt, and ruined brown shoes. Her small handbag slipped from her frail fingers, skittering down the steps.
"Get out of here right now, you miserable old woman, you only cause trouble in this house!" Clara shouted, her voice cutting sharply through the roar of the storm.
Martha gasped, her breath hitching in the freezing air. She reached out with trembling, arthritic hands, her eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and profound sorrow. "Have mercy, it's raining, I have nowhere to go, may I leave tomorrow?" she pleaded softly, her voice barely audible over the thunder.
Clara sneered, shoving the brown leather suitcase harder against the pillar. The lid popped open further, exposing a jumble of folded winter clothes and an assortment of prescription medicine bottles rattling against one another in the wind. Clara did not care. She had waited months for her husband, Julian, to leave for his international business trip, and now that he was thousands of miles away, she intended to reclaim her territory. She despised the old woman’s quiet presence, her lingering medical needs, and the subtle ways Julian deferred to his mother.

Unnoticed in the deep shadow of the eastern stone pillar, Elena, the young household maid, crouched low. Her fingers trembled as she pulled her mobile phone from her pocket, shielding the screen from the biting rain. She dialed a number she knew by heart, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept her voice down to an urgent whisper, pitching it just loud enough for the microphone to catch. "You're leaving right now, sir. Your wife is abusing your mother," Elena hissed into the phone before ending the call instantly.
Miles away, inside the brilliantly lit, cavernous terminal of the international airport, Julian walked briskly past bustling travelers. He wore a sharp gray suit, a crisp white shirt, and a blue tie, his wristwatch gleaming under the fluorescent lights. His rolling suitcase tracked smoothly behind him. When his phone buzzed, he pulled it to his ear without slowing his pace, expecting a routine flight update. Instead, Elena’s frantic words struck him like physical blows. Julian froze in the middle of the crowded concourse, his face darkening with a fury that frightened a nearby airline attendant. "She dared to lay a hand on my mother?!" he shouted furiously, turning on his heel to sprint back toward the exit.
