Chapter 3

While Clara and Aaron mapped out a discreet exit strategy through the kitchens, Julian sat in the rear of the black SUV, his phone pressed tightly against his ear. His knuckles were white against the polished aluminum casing as he barked orders into the receiver, demanding that his corporate legal team draft immediate injunctions and asset freezes should Clara attempt to contact authorities or financial institutions. The veneer of the charming, successful entrepreneur had completely dissolved, replaced by a ruthless pragmatism that prioritized his public reputation above all human considerations. The wedding reception inside was still loud with laughter, oblivious to the fact that the groom had just committed a violent felony in the lobby.
Outside the vehicle, the bodyguard stood sentinel near the driver’s side door, scanning the perimeter of the sprawling estate parking lot. The night air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine, a sharp contrast to the sterile tension inside the car. The bodyguard’s earpiece crackled with static as another operative inside the venue reported that the target was no longer visible in the lobby. A low curse escaped Julian’s lips as he slammed the car door open, stepping back out onto the asphalt with a menacing scowl. He could not afford a scandal; his upcoming political appointment depended entirely on projecting an image of stable, wholesome domesticity.

Back inside the service corridors, Aaron guided Clara past towering stacks of linen carts and chilled metal shelving units used by the catering staff. Every rustle of paper or clink of silverware sounded like an approaching threat, amplifying Clara’s racing pulse. Yet, despite the pain gripping her lower back, her resolve hardened with every step. She had endured years of psychological manipulation, isolation, and escalating physical abuse, convincing herself that staying was a sacrifice for the sake of the family. Now, looking down at her rounded form, she understood that staying was a death sentence for both of them.
Reaching the rear loading dock, Aaron spotted an unattended delivery van idling with its keys dangling from the ignition—a stroke of incredible fortune in a moment of utter desperation. He helped Clara climb cautiously into the passenger seat, ensuring her white dress was tucked safely away from the closing door. As Aaron slid behind the steering wheel, he glanced once more toward the main entrance of the venue, half-expecting Julian’s silhouette to appear against the floodlights. Instead, the night remained quiet, save for the hum of the engine. With a steady hand, Aaron put the vehicle into gear, steering them away from the opulent estate and plunging into the dark, welcoming anonymity of the highway.
