Chapter 1

The heavy oak doors of the grand foyer muffled the distant strains of classical strings playing inside the reception hall, but they could not silence the cruel reality unfolding upon the cold white marble floor. Clara, thirty years old, struggled to draw breath as the sharp pain radiated outward from her lower abdomen. Her elegant white dress, styled with a daring high slit, was stained with dust and pooled uncomfortably around her trembling legs. Only moments earlier, her husband, Julian, a man of thirty-five impeccably dressed in a tailored black tuxedo and a matching black bow tie, had shoved her violently to the ground. His cold blue eyes held no remorse, only a fierce, blinding panic as he looked down at her curled form.
Julian’s voice cut through the silence of the lobby, sharp and devoid of any lingering warmth. He glared down at Clara, his jaw tight with venomous authority, and ordered the security staff to remove her immediately and conceal any visible bruises before anyone else could witness the carnage. Clara clutched her rounded belly, protecting the life growing inside her with every ounce of remaining strength. She had known for months that Julian possessed a dark, controlling temperament behind his philanthropic public facade, but tonight’s brutality crossed a definitive threshold. The glittering promise of their high-society wedding day had turned into a nightmare of domestic tyranny.

Without a backward glance of genuine sympathy, Julian turned on his polished patent leather shoes and strode rapidly toward the magnificent glass double doors of the lobby. A silver soda can lay forgotten near the base of the entryway, kicked aside by his hurried stride. As he pushed through the glass portal into the cool night air, he brushed past a man in a crisp white lab coat—Dr. Aaron Vance, who had been quietly waiting outside for an unrelated medical consultation regarding the venue's catered safety. Aaron’s observant gaze briefly locked onto Julian’s flushed, agitated face before shifting inside to where Clara lay struggling against the marble.
Outside the illuminated portico, a sleek black SUV idled quietly against the curb. A towering bodyguard in a severe black suit stepped briskly from the vehicle, holding the rear door open for Julian with mechanical precision. Julian muttered a harsh instruction to the operative, gesturing vaguely back toward the lobby entrance, before sliding into the dark leather interior. Inside the foyer, Clara heard the muffled murmur of engines revving outside. She knew her survival depended on making a critical choice right now. With the quiet determination born of maternal instinct, she dragged herself toward the shadows, praying that Dr. Aaron Vance would turn around and walk back through those glass doors before Julian’s men returned to finish what they had started.
