Chapter 2

Dr. Aaron Vance stood frozen for a fraction of a second on the exterior patio, his mind processing the stark contrast between the lavish celebration echoing from the grand ballroom and the chilling encounter he had just witnessed. Through the pristine glass doors, he caught sight of Clara struggling to pull herself upright against a marble pillar, clutching her abdomen with agonizing care. Aaron did not hesitate. Pushing past the threshold, he ignored the fading echo of Julian’s receding footsteps and knelt beside the injured woman. His training as a trauma specialist kicked in instantly, his hands moving with calm, practiced reassurance as he identified himself and assessed her physical condition.

Clara gasped, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and lingering adrenaline. She gripped Aaron’s forearm, her fingers leaving faint impressions in the fabric of his white lab coat. She whispered that she needed to protect her unborn child, begging him not to let Julian’s security detail find her here. Aaron nodded firmly, his expression a mask of steady professional concern. He quickly scanned the lobby, noting the displaced silver can near the doorway and the faint bruising already blossoming along Clara’s exposed collarbone. He recognized the systemic signs of abuse immediately, having treated countless victims who hid their torment behind expensive clothes and polite smiles.

Outside, the heavy thud of approaching footsteps signaled the return of Julian’s bodyguard. Acting swiftly, Aaron helped Clara maneuver behind a heavy velvet drapery that partitioned the service corridor from the main lobby. The thick fabric muffled their breathing just as the glass doors swung open. The bodyguard in the black suit scanned the foyer with cold, clinical efficiency, his eyes lingering on the empty stretch of white marble where Clara had fallen. Finding the room seemingly vacant except for the scattered debris, the man grunted in annoyance, checked his wrist communicator, and stepped back outside to report a false trail to his employer.

In the safety of the corridor, Clara finally allowed a ragged sob to escape her lips, though she quickly suppressed it, remembering Julian’s constant warnings against showing weakness. Aaron gently placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, murmuring that she was safe for the moment. He pulled a small penlight from his pocket to check her neurological responses, ensuring she had not suffered a concussion during the violent fall. Clara realized that this stranger in the white lab coat represented her single lifeline in a world where everyone else was either bought and paid for by Julian’s immense wealth or too terrified to intervene. She made a silent vow to reclaim her autonomy, beginning with escaping this cursed venue tonight.
