Chapter 11 - Sisters Apart

“Put the lighter down, Bianca,” Sarah said, stepping out from behind Marcus. Her voice was steady, completely devoid of the fear she had carried on the front porch hours earlier.

Bianca’s eyes widened slightly, her gaze locking onto Sarah’s bruised face and torn clothes. A manic sneer twisted her lips. “Look at you. The martyr. Always mother’s favorite, always the good girl. You couldn't even save your own husband, Sarah. What made you think you could save Lily?”

“Lily isn’t a bargaining chip, Bianca,” Sarah said, taking a calculated step forward. “She’s a child. Your own niece. How could you help Arthur touch her?”

“Because Arthur was going to give me everything!” Bianca screamed, her knuckles turning white around the lighter. “Mother left you the money because she knew you were weak! She knew you’d spend every penny on a sick child who won't even live to see her tenth birthday!”

The cruelty of the words didn’t hurt Sarah anymore; it only clarified the utter ruin of her sister’s soul.

“Lily is going to live,” Sarah said softly. “And you are going to prison.”

Bianca’s eyes flared with rage. With a sudden jerk, she dropped the lighter toward the gasoline-soaked papers.

Marcus fired a non-lethal round, striking the lighter out of mid-air in a shower of sparks. Sarah lunged forward, tackling Bianca to the floor before the flame could catch.

The two sisters collided among the scattered documents. Bianca clawed wildly, but Sarah pinned her arms to the floor with the full weight of her protective fury, twisting Bianca’s wrist until she surrendered.

Sirens wailed in the distance below, their flashing lights painting the archive walls in crimson and sapphire.

Bianca spat blood onto the floor, glaring up at Sarah with venomous eyes. “You think you won? Arthur isn't at the diner, Sarah. He didn't come here either. Where do you think he went when he broke through Clara's defense?”

Sarah’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. The car.
